Big Blue: Michigan a Rumor No More

by Brian Logue |

The long awaited announcement that Michigan will be adding varsity lacrosse is expected to come on Wednesday. The school issued a media advisory on Tuesday afternoon saying that athletic director Dave Brandon would meet with at 12 noon on Wednesday for a major announcement regarding Michigan's athletics program.

Michigan's club men's lacrosse team lost to Arizona State in the semifinals of the Men's Collegiate Lacrosse Association championships this past weekend in Denver, ending a run of three straight national championships. Michigan's club women's lacrosse team reached the US Lacrosse Women's Collegiate Lacrosse Associates tournament this year in Scottsdale, Ariz.

Unconfirmed reports have the Michigan men's team going varsity as soon as 2012 and playing in the ECAC with the women's team coming on board the following year.

If Michigan makes the move for men's varsity lacrosse, it will be the first BCS-playing football school to add men's Division I lacrosse since Notre Dame in 1981.
