Georgetown Seniors Deal 'Nova a Parting Shot

WASHINGTON -- Rickey Mirabito (Binghamton, N.Y./Chenango Forks) made his final game on the Hilltop a memorable one, scoring two goals and dishing out five assists to lead the Georgetown University men's lacrosse team (7-7, 4-2 BIG EAST) past No. 9 Villanova (11-4, 3-3 BIG EAST), 11-9 on Senior Night at Multi-Sport Field.
The Wildcats stormed back from a four goal deficit in the fourth quarter, bringing the game to within a goal twice, but Georgetown senior goalie Jack Davis (Glen Ridge, N.J./Glen Ridge), who earned the victory with five saves, made his biggest one with under 25 seconds remaining in the game and launched a full field clear to Travis Comeau (Red Deer, Alberta/Hill Academy) who found the top left corner of the goal to seal the Hoyas 11-9 victory.
Mirabito's five assists gave him 30 for the season, the fifth highest single season total in Hoya history. Comeau finished with four goals and Davey Emala (Baltimore, Md./Gilman) had two goals and an assist to lead the offense.
Seniors Barney Ehrmann (Baltimore, Md./Gilman) caused four turnovers and Tyler Knarr (Eagleville, Pa./LaSalle College High School) went 13-for-19 on face-offs with five ground balls, to help GU defeat the Wildcats for the ninth consecutive time.
The Hoyas scored first at the 12:39 mark in the first quarter when Mirabito found a cutting Emala to put GU in front, 1-0. Villanova answered less than a minute later when Max Hart scored on an assist from Will Casertano to tie the score.
Comeau would start a three goal run, scoring consecutive goals,
before David Shriver (Timonium, Md./Boys Latin) picked up a ground
ball in front of the crease and found the back of the net for an
extra-man goal, giving Georgetown a comfortable 4-1 lead in the
Villanova responded, as C.J. Small scored the final goal of the first quarter and Jack Rice and CJ Burke scored eight minutes apart in the second to tie the score at four goals apiece.
Mirabito took over, scoring two unassisted goals late in the second quarter, then after Villanova cut the lead to one goal, assisting Max Seligmann's (Essex Fells, N.J./Delbarton) goal to open a 7-5 lead. Emala scored his second goal of the game on an assist from Brian Casey (Bethesda, Md./Georgetown Prep) with 19 seconds left in the third quarter and Mirabito would assist Comeau's third goal early in the fourth to give GU a four goal cushion, at 9-5.
Nick Doherty would start another three goal Wildcats run, scoring at the 8:12 mark in the fourth quarter. Matt Bell and Hart pumped in two more to cut Georgetown's lead to one goal with 6:25 remaining in the game.
Zack Angel (Park Hall, Md./St. Mary's Ryken) put the Hoyas back in front by two on Mirabito's fifth assist, but VU cut the lead back to one, on Casertano's goal with 1:28 left. The Wildcats won the final face-off, but Davis made a key save and launched a full field clear to Comeau, whose underhanded shot found the top left corner to seal the 11-9 goal for the Hoyas.
NOTES: Senior Brian Tabb (Potomac, Md./Georgetown Prep) tied Christiaan Trunz on Georgetown's all-time face-off wins list, recording his 329th win in the third quarter...Travis Comeau's four goals gave him 30 for the season. Comeau and Emala became the first GU tandem to score 30 goals in the same season in 10 years. Scott Doyle (30) and Steve Dusseau (38 goals) accomplished the feat in 2001.
