from press release

HAMDEN, Conn. -- Senior Jack Oppenheimer (Conshohocken, Pa.) tallied a career-high seven points as the Quinnipiac University men's lacrosse team overwhelmed intrastate Northeast Conference rival Sacred Heart, 18-9, on Senior Day Saturday at the Quinnipiac Field Hockey & Lacrosse Turf Field. With the win, the Bobcats (5-6, 3-1 NEC) clinch the No. 2 seed in the Northeast Conference Tournament, to be played May 6-8 at Mount St. Mary's. The Pioneers fall to 4-8 (1-3 NEC).

Oppenheimer's seven points (five goals, two assists) are the most by a Quinnipiac player since 2002. Dylan Webster (Brampton, Ontario) and Billy Alessi (Branford, Conn.) also chipped in hat tricks with three goals apiece, while Webster also added a pair of assists. Christian Haggerty (West Nyack, N.Y.) had a five-point day with two goals and three assists, while Brendan Wilbur (Hingham, Mass.) and Kevin Kelly (Redding, Conn.) had a goal and two assists each. Basil Kostaras (Southlake, Texas), Tom Gilligan (Brookfield, Conn.) and Mike Gast (Grand Rapids, Mich.) also scored once each for Quinnipiac, while Jay Binkowski (Bethany, Conn.) added an assist.

Mike Mawdsley and Bailey Dodds scored three goals each for Sacred Heart, while Shane Foley, Tim Caton and Matt King scored once each. Cody Marquis contributed three assists, while Bryan Badolato had two.

Kevin Benzing (Severna Park, Md.) got the win in net for the Bobcats, making 10 saves, while allowing four goals. Included in his 10 saves was the 500th of his career. Zach Frank took the loss for Sacred Heart, making 10 saves.

After the two teams exchanged goals in the early going, the Bobcats ambushed the Pioneers with 15 of the next 16 goals to take a 16-2 lead by the midway point of the third quarter. Oppenheimer registered all seven of his points in the first 34 minutes of play, including six in the first half. Sacred Heart scored the next seven goals against three different goalies to close to within seven goals at 16-9. But Alessi and Gilligan put an end to the run with a pair of goals to close the scoring for the Bobcats.

The Bobcats close the regular season with a road NEC contest at Wagner on Saturday, April 30. Opening faceoff from Wagner College Stadium is scheduled for 1 p.m.
