Jones' Four-Goal Fourth Sparks UMBC Win

from press release

ALBANY, N.Y. -- Scott Jones tallied four of his career-high five goals in the fourth quarter as UMBC pulled away for a 13-9 victory over UAlbany in America East Conference play on Saturday, April 16 at John Fallon Field.

Albany (4-8, AE 0-3) drew even at nine apiece early in the final period as freshman midfielder Ryan Feuerstein found the cage from the right side off a feed from Brian Caufield. UMBC (5-5, AE 2-1) regained the lead when Zach Linkous hit the post and Jones picked up the rebound and hit the left side of the net with 9:53 remaining.

The Retrievers, who won their third in a row, pulled away as Albany tried to double-team defensively. Jones scored a pair one minute and 35 seconds apart. The first goal came from the top of the crease when Dave Brown sent a pass from deep right to front of the cage. Defenseman Ethan Murphy sealed the verdict on an empty-net goal with 1:52 to play.

In the first half, the teams slugged it out in a steady rain with winds gusting past 20 miles per hour. The Retrievers took a 4-3 lead to the intermission with 12.8 seconds left in the second quarter. Scott Hopmann moved around a defensive midfielder and ripped a shot to right of starting goalkeeper Edmund Cathers.

Brown, who totaled one goal and five assists, nailed a bounce shot for a two-goal advantage early in the third period. But the Great Danes regrouped with back-to-back goals in a 25-second span. Miles Thompson scored after a stick-check dislodged the ball on the following face-off. The freshman attackman tied the contest when he backed in on a defender and scored high into the net from right of the crease.

The Great Danes later took a 7-6 lead as Thompson found the cage on a behind-the-head shot after collected a return pass from Ty Thompson in an extra-man situation. UMBC came back with consecutive goals before the end of the third period. Jamie Kimbles, a senior who accounted for four goals and two assists, sent a blast inside the left post, before Brian Patton went high into the left side after teammate J.D. Harkey collected a Albany turnover at midfield to start the transition play.

In the final quarter, Albany forced an 8-8 deadlock, one of seven ties in the contest, when Matt Johnson scored his second goal of the game by dodging around a defender. Jones, a 6-foot-4 sophomore attackman, put his team back in front by finishing off Joe Lustgarten right-to-left crossing pass.

UMBC goalkeeper Brian McCullough made nine saves. Miles Thompson led Albany in scoring with three goals and one assist. Caufield, one of 11 seniors making his final home appearance, added one goal and handed out two assists.
