Sandtorv Keys Air Force Win over Bellarmine

from press release

LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- Led by a career-high six points from senior Vinny Sandtorv (Centereach, N.Y.), the Air Force lacrosse team earned a 12-7 road victory over Bellarmine Saturday afternoon at Owsley B. Frazier Stadium.

Sandtorv scored a career-best-tying five goals, including four in the first half, and added an assist, as the Falcons won their second-straight game to improve to 4-6 on the season and 2-2 in the ECAC. Meanwhile, the Knights drop to 4-8 on the year and 0-3 in the league.

Air Force took a 3-0 lead midway through the opening period, before a man-up goal by Luke Acton put Bellarmine on the board at the 5:50 mark. Sandtorv tallied his second goal of the contest with less than a minute remaining in the period to give the Falcons a 4-1 advantage after one period.

A pair of Bellarmine goals in the first five minutes of the second quarter cut the Knights' deficit to a single point, but another Sandtorv goal sparked a 4-0 run by the Falcons. Freshmen Kyle Cassady (Columbus, Ohio) and Erik Smith (Golden, Colo.) pitched in goals for Air Force, while Sandtorv's goal with one second remaining gave the Falcons an 8-3 cushion at the half.

Bellarmine began to make a run after the break, scoring the first three goals of the period to cut the margin to two goals with just over five minutes in the quarter remaining. However, back-to-back scores from Zack Carroll (Sr., Freehold Township, N.J.) and Adam Paranka (Jr., Denver, Colo.) pushed Air Force's lead back to four after three quarters. Meanwhile, the Falcons outscored the Knights 2-1 in the final period to take the 12-7 victory.

In addition to Sandtorv's six points, Smith tallied four points with two goals and two assists, while also winning 12-of-15 face-offs for the Falcons. Paranka added three points on one goal and two assists, while Cassady finished with a pair of goals. Also finding the back of the net for Air Force was freshman Mike Crampton (Kinnelon, N.J.), who tallied a goal and an assist.
Air Force held the advantage at the face-off X, winning 15-of-22 draws, and outshot the Knights 38-29. However, Bellarmine was perfect on its extra-man opportunities, going 3-of-3 on the EMO, while holding the Falcons scoreless on four man-up tries.

The Falcons return home next weekend, April 17, when they host ECAC opponent Ohio State in a 7:00 p.m. contest.
