Crowley Carries Stony Brook over Bryant

from press release

STONY BROOK, N.Y. -- Seniors Kevin Crowley (New Westminster, British Columbia) and Brett Drost (Wading River, N.Y.) each had two goals in a decisive, 7-1 third quarter as the #12 Stony Brook men's lacrosse team rolled past Bryant, 13-6, at Kenneth P. LaValle Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

Crowley finished the day with four goals and an assist for Stony Brook (4-3), which defeated Bryant (3-5) for a second straight year. His five points give him 207 for his career, tops among all active Division I players.

Junior Adam Dahms (Herndon, Va.) and seniors Timmy Trenkle (Commack, N.Y.) and Jordan McBride (New Westminster, British Columbia) also scored in the third as the Seawolves took a 10-5 lead after trailing 4-3. The seven-goal output was Stony Brook's most in a quarter this season.

The defense, led by junior Kyle Moeller (South Setauket, N.Y.), held Bryant to just two second-half goals. Moeller had five ground balls and two caused turnovers to lead all close defensemen.

Gary Crowley had three goals and Peter McMahon tallied three assists to lead the Bulldogs.

"We've been practicing hard, but haven't been able to put it together on game days," coach Rick Sowell said. "Kevin Crowley put on his back today and led us to a gritty victory."

Bryant took a 4-1 lead after a goal from Max Weisenberg at 11:59 of the second quarter. But Crowley went to work for Stony Brook, scoring two straight goals, including a goal from junior Robbie Campbell (Delta, British Columbia) with one second left in the first half.

"Kevin's goal just before the first half was huge for us," Sowell said. "Instead of going down 4-2, we're down just one with momentum going our way."

Trenkle's unassisted goal at 7:22 of the third quarter capped a streak of six straight goals for the Seawolves. Crowley's man-up goal ended a drought of more than 20 minutes for the Bulldogs.

Crowley and McBride scored 23 seconds apart before an unassisted goal from Drost with 40 seconds left in the third quarter gave Stony Brook a 10-5 lead.

Senior Tom Compitello (Hauppauge, N.Y.), who added three assists, scored unassisted at 5:35 of the fourth quarter. Campbell tacked on a goal with 2:52 left in regulation.

Senior Adam Rand (Niantic, Conn.) won 12 of 22 draws and had eight ground balls. His second face-off won gave him 700 for his career, making him just the fifth player in NCAA Division I history to reach that mark.

The Seawolves were 15-for-15 on clear attempts and won the ground ball margin, 34-16.

Stony Brook, picked first in the America East preseason poll, opens conference play against UMBC on Friday, April 1 at 7:00 p.m. The game will be televised nationally on the CBS College Sports Network.
