Baum Proves Clutch in Colgate Win over Stags
from press release
HAMILTON, N.Y. -- The Colgate men's lacrosse
team secured its fifth win of the season when it defeated Fairfield
11-9 on Saturday afternoon.
Sophomore Peter Baum led the Raiders in scoring with four goals
while senior Andrew Mould had three and sophomore Matt Baker had
two. Juniors Jeff Ledwick and Kevin Gordon also added one goal
apiece.
The Stags came out to a quick start, creating a series of scoring
opportunities and hitting the post at the 13:31 mark in the opening
minutes of the game. However, despite Fairfield creating majority
of the attempts on net, it was Colgate (4-3, 1-0 PL) that opened
scoring with a man-up goal from Baker at the 9:37 mark to take the
1-0 lead. Sophomore Michael Thomas was credited with the assist.
Not deterred, the Stags continued to threaten Colgate's net and at
the 7:23 mark, they were rewarded with an equalizer to tie the game
at 1-1. Determined to maintain their lead, the Raiders then scored
back-to-back unassisted goals at the 6:37 and 4:36 marks courtesy
of Mould and Ledwick, to increase their lead to 3-1.
Similar to the first quarter, Fairfield came out to an explosive
start, finding a second goal just 48 seconds into play to reduce
the scoring margin to one goal. Colgate then came alive, forcing
the Stags to make a series of turnovers while attacking their net.
The Raiders' hard work eventually paid off with a pair of goals
from Baker and Baum respectively at the 4:34 and 3:38 marks to
improve their lead to 5-2, which they held going into half time.
Baum was also credited with an assist in Baker's goal.
The third quarter began in the Colgate's' favor this time, finding
an early goal from Mould at the 12:25 mark to take the 6-2
advantage. Fairfield answered back with a goal just over a minute
later, however a seventh goal for the Raiders at the 7:45 mark
courtesy of Baum, returned the scoring margin to five goals. Both
teams continued to play hard but by the end of the period the score
remained 7-4.
Both teams came out playing aggressively in the final 15 minutes of
play. Colgate attacked first but then a penalty on the Raiders
allowed Fairfield to find a pair of man-up goals at the 13:25 and
13:05 marks to put the score at 7-6. Feeling the pressure, Colgate
responded with a goal from Baum at the 10:51 mark to give itself
some breathing room. The pressure was soon returned with the Stags
finding the net minutes later to reduce the margin to just one
point once again. The goal did not phase the Raiders, who then
found a trio of goals from Mould, Gordon and Baum to take the 11-7
lead with just over a minute left in the game. Fairfield then went
on to find two more goals in the final seconds of the game but it
was not enough to topple Colgate, giving the Raiders the 11-9
victory.
Junior Jared Madison had 13 saves for the Raiders while Fairfield's
Charlie Cipriano had nine stops.
