Hartford Falls Short of Upset at Bucknell
from staff reports
LEWISBURG, Pa. – Billy Eisenreich (Chatham, N.J./Chatham) assisted on the tying goal and scored the game-winning goal 41 seconds apart in the fourth quarter, helping the Bucknell men's lacrosse team to a 7-6 win over Hartford Wednesday afternoon at Christy Mathewson-Memorial Stadium. Eisenreich finished the contest with two goals and one assist.
The Bison dominated the first quarter and led 4-1 at the half. However, Hartford (3-3) tallied five consecutive goals in the third and fourth quarters to take a 6-4 advantage with less than 10 minutes to play.
Bucknell (5-1), which won for the sixth consecutive time at home, drew to within one when Charlie Streep (New Canaan, Conn./Loomis Chaffee) connected on a long outside shot midway through the fourth quarter. Less than two minutes later Eisenreich found freshman Todd Heritage (Cheshire, Conn./Cheshire) stationed on the right side of the goal for a man-up goal that tied score.
Jake Clarke (Cos Cob, Conn./Greenwich) won the ensuing faceoff and Eisenreich wasted little time netting what proved to be the game-winner with 5:01 on the clock.
Clarke, who won all five faceoffs in the final quarter and 10 of 16 overall, gave Bucknell possession again and the Bison ran the clock down to three minutes before the Hawks gained possession.
Bucknell regained possession with two minutes to play after a turnover by the Hawks. However, a turnover on a restart following a Streep shot gave Hartford a chance to tie the score. As the Hawks advanced the ball downfield, Jason Neithamer (Alexandria, Va./St. Stephen's & St. Agnes School) was whistled for slashing, giving Hartford a man advantage. Bison goalie Kyle Feeney (Greenwich, Conn./Greenwich) made the save on a low shot with 35 seconds to play, appearing to clinch the game. However, another turnover gave Hartford one more chance.
On that final possession in the closing seconds, Conor Flynn
attemped a shot from the top of the box that was blocked and rolled
out of bounds to Bucknell. A long pass down the field on the
restart burned the final four seconds off the clock.
The Bison outshot the Hawks by a 40-22 margin, including 19-4 in the first quarter. Bucknell took 15 shots before Hartford even recorded a shot attempt.
Eisenreich and Klipstein led the Bison with two goals apiece, while Mike Danylyshyn (Fairport, N.Y./Fairport) assisted on a pair of first-half goals.
Jared Franze led the Hawks with two goals, both in the second half.
Hartford's Frank Piechota made 14 saves in the loss, with nine of those coming in the first quarter. Bucknell's Feeney recorded six saves.
The Bison had just two turnovers in the first half as it built its 4-1 halftime lead.
Bucknell, which has played four of its last six games at Christy Mathewson-Memorial Stadium, will head on the road to Lafayette and Robert Morris its next two contests.
