Second Half Carries UMass Past Providence

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The No. 10 UMass men's
lacrosse team moved to 5-1 on the season with a 14-6 win at
Providence on Tuesday afternoon. The Minutemen outscored the
Friars, 7-1 in the second half. Senior captain Ryan Hantverk and
junior Art Kell each scored three goals while juniors Anthony
Biscardi and Steve D'Amario along with sophomore Colin Fleming each
netted a pair of goals.
Fleming finished with a career-high four points as he also had two
assists. Will Manny added a goal and two assists for three
points.
The defense buckled up in the second half with senior goalie Tim
McCormack finishing with nine saves.
UMass outscored Providence 5-1 in the third quarter on tallies by
five different players in the period for a 12-6 lead after three.
Mael Walkowiak netted his second-career goal on a man-down score
off a feed from Bobby Tyler, just 52 seconds in the third. Kell,
D'Amario, Fleming and Biscardi also scored. The final two goals in
the last four minutes were reciprocal feeds from Fleming and
Biscardi for goals.
With the score deadlocked at 2-2, midway through the first
quarter, UMass scored five of the next six goals to take a 7-3 lead
with 5:11 left in the second quarter. Will Manny gave UMass a
four-goal edge on an extra-man goal off a sweet pass from Colin
Fleming.
Hantverk tallied three goals in the first half, coming in the
first 17 minutes of action.
The Friars closed the gap just before halftime with a pair of
goals in the final 1:46 as Jake Nolan netted a pair late to bring
Providence to within two at intermission, 7-5.
Providence won 10 of the first 14 face-offs in the first half as
each team tallied 15 shots. The Friars finished with an 18-6
advantage in the draws.
UMass hosts its CAA opener against Penn State on Saturday at 12
p.m., at Garber Field.
