Down Early, Harvard Beats Holy Cross
from press release
CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – The Harvard men's
lacrosse team faced a 4-1 deficit early in the second period, but
rattled off nine unanswered goals in the final three periods to
take down Holy Cross, 10-4, Tuesday afternoon at Soldiers Field
Soccer/Lacrosse Stadium. Harvard (4-1) remains unbeaten at home
this season while the Crusaders fall to 0-6 on the year.
Both goalies shined in the early going, as Harvard's Harry Krieger
and Holy Cross' Mike Fisher recorded a number of saves each to keep
the score at 0-0 through the first 8:30 of play. The Crimson
started the scoring at the 6:30 mark of the first as Jeff Cohen
buried a pass from Jack Doyle to stake the hosts to a 1-0 lead. The
Crusaders answered with a vengeance, however, netting three goals
in the final 3:37 to take a 3-1 lead after one.
The saves kept coming and the score stayed low through the second
frame as Krieger posted seven saves at the break and Fisher notched
12. Holy Cross pushed its lead to 4-1 just 55 seconds into the
second period but a man-up tally from Cohen and an Alex White score
brought Harvard to within one, 4-3, at the break.
The Harvard defense went into lockdown mode to start the second
half and went on to shutout Holy Cross in the final two periods,
holding the Crusaders to just 11 shots. A Daniel DiMaria goal 22
seconds into the third period knotted the score at 4-4 and Kevin
Vaughan's goal at 12:37 gave Harvard the lead for good. Vaughan
scored again with 2:50 left in the third and Cohen posted his
second hat trick in as many games with a tally at 2:06. Reigning
Ivy League Rookie of the Week Daniel Eipp made it 8-4 with 30
seconds left in the frame and Cohen notched his fourth of the game
20 seconds later for a 9-4 lead after three. Dean Gibbons posted
Harvard's final goal at 7:00 of the fourth to clinch the 10-4
final.
Cohen registered a five-point afternoon with a quartet of goals and
an assist, firing eight shots on net and logging a ground ball.
Vaughan had two goals, an assist and a pair of ground balls on the
afternoon and Krieger finished the game with 11 saves. The Crimson
outshot the Crusaders 45-29 and had the edge in faceoffs (13-5) and
ground balls (32-23). The Crimson was also 25-for-29 on clear
attempts in the game.
Harvard kicks off Ivy League play in its next game when it travels
to Providence, R.I. to take on Brown March 19. Game time is set for
