Scalley Propels Mt. St. Mary's Past Detroit

EMMITSBURG, Md. -- Andrew Scalley had three
goals and three assists to lead Mount St. Mary's past Detroit
Mercy, 12-8, in men's lacrosse action at Waldron Family Stadium on
Wednesday afternoon.
The Mount (1-2) started the game quickly, scoring four goals over
the first 5:49 of the contest to grab the early lead. Junior
Anthony Golden opened the scoring just 1:13 into the game with his
second goal of the year. Junior Bryant Schmidt made it 2-0
when he fired a shot past Detroit goalkeeper A.J. Levell with 10:33
left in the half. That goal was the first of three in a span
of 1:22 that included scores from Daniel Stranix and Scalley.
Detroit (1-6) chipped away at the lead with goals from Alex Maini
and Matt Gregson 26 seconds apart to make the score 4-2 at the end
of the first quarter. Shayne Adams tallied a man-up goal late
in the second quarter to make the score 4-3 at the half.
The Mount's Eric Ososki pushed the margin back to two early in the
second half when he ran over a Detroit defender and then buried a
shot for a 5-3 lead. The Titans, however, had back-to-back
goals from Scott Harris and Tim Lehto to even the score at
5-5. Cody Lehrer answered for the Mount, but Harris evened
the score again with 7:34 left in the third quarter.
The Mount took the lead for good when Brett Schmidt scored with
6:17 left in the third quarter for a 7-6 lead. Detroit looked
to have the equalizing goal three minutes later, but was called for
being in the crease, taking the goal off the scoreboard.
Stranix and Scalley then converted for the Mount to stretch the
lead to 9-6 after three quarters of play.
Detroit fought back once again, cutting the Mount advantage to 9-8
on a pair of Harris scores. Scalley, however, gave the Mount
a two-goal cushion with his third goal of the game with 9:25
left. Ososki and Brett Schmidt each scored in the final two
minutes to seal the win.
Scalley matched his career high with six points in the game (3g,
3a) while Brett Schmidt and Ososki added two goals and an assist
each in the victory. Stranix chipped in a career-best two
goals with Lehrer and Golden adding a goal and an assist each for
the Mountaineers.
Face-off man Ben Trapp had an outstanding day for the Mount,
winning 18-of-22 face-offs in the game while collecting a team-high
seven ground balls. Goalkeeper T.C. DiBartolo made 10 saves
in the game, including eight in the first half.
Harris led Detroit with four goals and an assist while Gregson and
Lehto added a goal and an assist each for the Titans. Levell
made seven saves in the loss.
The shots were even at 39-39 in the game while the Mount held a
31-to-26 edge in ground balls. Mount St. Mary's committed 26
turnovers in the game with Detroit's Jordan Houtby posting a
game-high four caused turnovers.
The Mount returns to action on Sunday, March 13, with a 1:00 p.m.
home game against Jacksonville at Waldron Family Stadium on
campus.
