Perri Scores Five in Fourth, Drexel Tops St. Joe's

PHILADELPHIA – Scott Perri scored five of
Drexel's six fourth quarter goals as the Dragons (2-3) defeated
Saint Joseph's at Vidas Field, 10-5. Drexel trailed by a goal
entering the fourth period, but outscored the Hawks (0-4), 6-0, in
the final 15 minutes of the contest. The game was the Colonial
Athletic Association opener for both teams.
Saint Joseph's led the game, 5-4, entering the fourth quarter and
was outshooting Drexel, 17-16 at that point. The Dragons struggled
with turnovers and were also down a man six times heading into the
final frame. Perri tied the game three minutes into the quarter and
then put the Dragons ahead for good at the 7:45 mark when he dove
across the front of the net and beat the Hawks' keeper to his left.
On the ensuing face off, Devin Thomas won the draw cleanly, fed
Robert Church, who set up Perri for a one timer to give Drexel two
goals in seven seconds and a one-goal lead. Church added an
insurance goal at the 6:43 mark and Perri closed the scoring with
two more goals in the final five minutes. Drexel outshout Saint
Joseph's, 14-2, in the fourth quarter.
The Hawks led by as many as two goals at one point in the second
quarter. Matt Dougherty and Kevin Dougherty put the Hawks ahead 4-2
and, after Dan Layfield's second goal of the game, Steve Dunn
scored with 5:41 left in the half to make it a 5-3 Saint Joseph's
lead. Aaron Prosser cut the Hawks' lead to one when he scored with
4:21 to play before intermission.
Saint Joseph's opened the scoring with a pair of goals in the
first quarter. Johnny Simanski and Kyle Williams each had
unassisted goals for the Hawks. The Drexel offense finally got
going in the final four minutes of the quarter. Layfield and Nick
Trizano each scored for Drexel to tie the game.
Drexel's defense held the Hawks off the board for the final 35:41
of the game and successfully killed off all seven penalties. The
Dragons controlled the “x” the entire game, winning 15
of their 18 attempts. Devin Thomas was 11-for 14 with five ground
balls, while fellow freshman Michael Roe was perfect on face-offs
in four attempts.
Chris Moffa turned aside 12 Drexel shots in the Saint Joseph's
cage. Drexel's Mark Manos made just five saves in the game.
Drexel is back home at Vidas Field on Sunday when Bryant comes to
town for a non-conference game at noon.
