Harvard Holds Off Georgetown in Shootout

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Dean Gibbons tallied a
season-high four goals, while Jeff Cohen added a hat trick, as the
Harvard men's lacrosse team outscored No. 20 Georgetown, 7-3, in
the first quarter and held on for a 16-15 win Tuesday afternoon at
the Soldiers Field Soccer/Lacrosse Stadium.
Harry Krieger made11 saves in net for the Crimson, which improves
to 2-1 overall and 2-0 at home. Daniel Eipp netted two goals and
handed out an assist, while Peter Schwartz and Kevin Vaughan scored
a goal and dished out two assists apiece. Davey Emala tallied a
game-high five goals and goalie Jack Davis recorded 13 stops for
Georgetown, which falls to 2-2 on the season.
After the Hoyas netted the first goal of the game at 13:05 of the
first quarter, Cohen tied the game 30 seconds later, before Gibbons
tallied back-to-back goals to give Harvard a 3-1 lead at 11:28. The
Crimson netted four more scores in the frame, including a man-up
tally by Peter Schwartz at 8:24, to take a 7-3 advantage into the
second quarter.
Following a 10-goal first quarter, the teams did not manage a score
until Doyle found the back of the net for Harvard at 3:55,
increasing the Crimson lead to 8-3. The Hoyas answered with a 4-0
run to close the half, getting within one, 8-7, at the break.
Gibbons gave Harvard a two-goal cushion after receiving an assist
by Mark Scalise at 10:51 of the third quarter, and then Daniel Eipp
and Doyle followed with scores to put Harvard up by three, 11-8.
Georgetown, though, answered once again, this time rolling off
three straight goals to tie the game with 54 seconds left in the
third quarter.
In the final session, Cohen and Gibbons netted goals at 11:37 and
11:03 of the fourth to give the Crimson a two-goal cushion, 13-11.
Following a score by Georgetown's Zack Angel at 10:05 to cut the
Crimson lead to 13-12, Vaughan, Matt Hill and Eric Slingerland
tallied Harvard goals to make it 16-12 in favor of Harvard with
2:46 remaining.
With 2:03 left, Emala scored his fifth goal of the game for the
Hoyas, and then Georgetown's Dan McKinney got Georgetown within
two, 16-14, with 1:09 remaining. The Hoyas added another goal by
Brian Casey with eight ticks left on the clock to get within a goal
of Harvard, but the Crimson forced a turnover after Georgetown won
the final faceoff to hold on for the victory.
Vaughan paced the Crimson with five ground balls, while causing
four turnovers. Jason Gonos caused three turnovers, and Gabriel
Mendola led Harvard with six faceoff victories. Georgetown owned a
slight advantage in ground balls, 33-32, and led in faceoff wins,
21-12. Harvard finished 17-of-22 on clear attempts and was 3-of-6
on man-up opportunities.
Harvard is back in action Friday evening as the Crimson will host
Bellarmine at the Soldiers Field Soccer/Lacrosse Stadium at 7
p.m.
