Georgetown Trio Tough to Stop in Triumph
from press release
QUEENS, N.Y. - Junior midfielder Zack Angel (Park Hall, Md./St. Mary's Ryken) scored the first two goals of the game for the Georgetown University men's lacrosse team (2-1, 1-0 BIG EAST) and the Hoyas would never trail, getting three-goal performances from Angel, Davey Emala (Baltimore, Md./Gilman) and Travis Comeau (Alberta, Canada/The Hill Academy) to defeat St. John's (1-2, 0-1 BIG EAST), 13-9 on Saturday afternoon at DaSilva Memorial Field.
It was the second time this season, including the Hoyas win over Jacksonville, where the trio of Angel, Comeau and Emala have scored three goals in the same game. The win improves Georgetown's series record against St. John's to 10-1.
Emala also dished out two assists, while Brian Casey (Bethesda, Md./Georgetown Prep) scored two goals and Rickey Mirabito (Binghamton, N.Y./Chenango Forks) had a goal and two assists in the Georgetown victory. Defensively, Jack Davis (Glen Ridge, N.J./Glen Ridge) made a season-high 14 saves and Dan Hostetler picked up six ground balls and caused three turnovers. Tyler Knarr picked up three ground balls and won seven face-offs.
Georgetown did not waste any time getting the offense started, as Angel scored 47-seconds into the game to put the GU in front, 1-0. Angel scored again just under five minutes later to extend the lead to two goals.
The Hoyas, who took 43 shots on the game, continued to pepper St. John's goalie Jeff Lowman, as Lowman saved one and two sailed wide before Casey found the back of the cage with 5:05 remaining in the first quarter to put the Hoyas up by three goals.
The Red Storm had an answer, as Kieran McArdle scored St. John's first goal with 3:45 remaining in the first quarter. They closed the Hoyas' lead to one seconds later, after Jordan Rothman won the face off, moved down field on the fast break and found Kevin Cernuto for the team's second goal. Max Seligmann (Essex Fells, N.J./Delbarton) put an end to St. John's run, scoring to put the Hoyas back in front by two goals.
In the second quarter, Seligmann assisted Comeau's first goal of the game less than two minutes in, to put Georgetown in front 5-2. Mirabito extended the Hoyas lead to four, before a St. John's goal, then Angel scored his third of the game to make the score 7-3. The team's would trade goals for the rest of the half, as Comeau scored again on a pass from Emala, before Emala's goal, assisted by Mirabito closed out the first half with the Hoyas in front, 9-5.
Georgetown would dominate the third quarter, with Emala scoring twice and Comeau and Casey each scoring give Georgetown an eight goal advantage, 13-5, its largest lead of the game. Cernuto would score the Red Storm's lone goal in the third quarter with 2:54 remaining to end the Hoyas four goal run.
St. John's would score three times in the final quarter, including Cernuto's third goal of the game, but it was too little too late, as Georgetown held on for a 13-9 victory.
The Hoyas continue its spring break traveling to Boston, Mass. for a Tuesday afternoon match up with the Harvard Crimson (1-1) at 3 p.m.
