Freshman Thompson Sparks Albany to First Win
from press release
ALBANY, N.Y. -- Freshman Miles Thompson had
three goals in leading UAlbany to an 11-9 victory over Delaware in
the Great Danes' home opener on Saturday, March 5 at John Fallon
Field.
Delaware (4-2) closed within 4-3 early in the second quarter on
Sean Finegan's unassisted goal. UAlbany (1-1) then rattled off five
unanswered, including defenseman Travis Lyons' first career goal
with 1:56 remaining in the period. The 6-foot-1 junior picked up a
ground ball at midfield and worked his way into the zone to hit the
top right corner.
The Danes, who fell to nationally-ranked Drexel in their season debut one week ago, scored four straight times to begin the third quarter for a 9-3 advantage. Ty Thompson and Miles Thompson, who are cousins, found the net two minutes and 14 seconds apart. Miles later uncorked a behind-the-back shot into the cage. Joe Resetarits connected off Brian Caufield's pass with 7:02 left in the stanza.
The Hens, who are receiving votes in this week's USILA national
poll, regrouped with four of the game's next five goals. Finegan
tallied twice in the run, including his ninth of the season, that
got his team within 10-7. UAlbany's Matt Johnson scored unassisted
with 7:54 remaining to help hold down the rally.
Noah Fossner made 10 saves for the Blue Hens, who reached last
year's Colonial Athletic Association championship final and earned
an NCAA berth. Nick Elsmo added two goals and two assists.
UAlbany's Edmund Cathers, a freshman, made his first start in the
cage and stopped 10 shots.
