Yale Scores 22 Again, Routs Mercer
from press release
NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Forty-four goals in two nights, that's what the No. 15 Yale men's lacrosse team produced against a pair of new Division I squads from the South. For the second night in a row, the Bulldogs (3-0) hit the net 22 times to take a 22-1 game against Mercer University at Reese Stadium.
Deron Dempster had five goals and two assists and Brian Douglass
had three tallies with six assists to lead an offensive attack that
included 11 different goal scorers. A night after putting 54 shots
on Presbyterian (22-6 win), the Elis outshot the Bears 49-22.
Winning the battle for ground balls 50-22 had a lot to do with the shot differential, but so did the difference in skill levels. The home team reeled off 22 goals before the guys from Macon, Ga., could find the net. The shots came from every part of the field and hit the net in almost every possible place.
Johnathan Falcone, Peter Spaulding and Jack Meyer had something to do with the Blue blanking the Bears for more than 57 minutes. Falcone earned the win with five saves over 34 minutes. Spaulding, who made a save on a mini breakaway and finished with four stops, played almost 18 minutes.
Benjamin Gifford had three goals and four points, Kirby Zdrill hit the net three times and Ryan McCarthy added two goals and three points on a night that almost the entire roster saw action.
At the other end, the Bulldog defense, which has given up just 15 goals in three games, forced 22 turnovers. Defenseman Michael McCormack led the team with four caused turnovers.
"Defensively, we stuck with our system," said captain and LSM Patrick Coleman, who had four ground balls and forced three turnovers while scoring a goal for the second straight night. "We took it possession by possession."
It was only natural for the Bulldogs to start thinking about a shutout in the waning moments of the contest. "Every team thinks about it, but you have to focus on each possession. This weekend gave everyone some experience as we head into the meat of the schedule," said Coleman.
Cole Branch scored the lone Mercer goal with 2:21 left when he
slipped in from the side and hit the top part of the net.
Cole Yeager (8-13), Dylan Levings (10-12) and Steve McLachlan (1-2) combined to win 19 of 27 faceoffs for the Bulldogs, who next play Lehigh on March 12 at 2 p.m.
BULLDOG BITES: Matt Gibson sat out the last two games with an injury... Thirty-six players saw action for the Blue tonight... Brian Douglass leads the team with 8-8-16... Deron Dempster (8-3-11) is tied for the team lead in goals... Johnathan Falcone has a 4.15 GAA with a .654 save percentage.
