Winkoff Gets Untracked; Penn Edges Lafayette
from press release
PHILADELPHIA - The Penn men's lacrosse team got
off to a fast start on Friday night against Lafayette, and while
the Leopards were able to claw back in and eventually tie the game,
in the end a goal by senior Corey Winkoff proved to be the
difference as the Quakers eked out a 7-6 victory at Franklin
Field.
Winkoff was Penn's leading scorer a year ago, but had been held
scoreless through the Red and Blue's first two games. On Friday, he
had a goal and two assists -- and 14th-ranked Penn needed all of
them.
Drama did not seem to be in order after one period -- Penn outshot
Lafayette 13-7 in the opening 15 minutes and held a 5-1 lead. Ryan
Hansen opened the scoring, putting Lafayette on the board just 2:06
into the game. However, the Quakers scored the next five to jump
out.
John Conneely was the catalyst -- he scored Penn's first and third
goals, sandwiching his efforts around an unassisted goal by Al
Kohart. Winkoff assisted Conneely's second goal, and he also
assisted Kohart's second which made it 4-1. Rob Fitzpatrick netted
a goal off a Conneely feed in the final seconds of the quarter. The
second quarter featured only one goal, from Lafayette's Will
Heffernan, and at the half it was 5-2, Penn.
Conneely netted his third goal of the night early in the third
quarter, but after that Lafayette worked its way back. Mike Galione
was the leader, as he assisted four straight goals that brought the
Leopards even with the Quakers. Doug Prusoff scored Lafayette's
third goal, and just more than a minute later Colin Serling made
the score 6-4. Four minutes after that, it was Alex Floeck's turn
to score, and Penn's lead was just 6-5 entering the fourth
quarter.
It took more than eight minutes in the fourth for either net to be
dented, but when it happened it was Lafayette's Tyler Silver who
did the deed. That tied the score at 6-6.
However, Winkoff scored on an unassisted goal with 3:58 left, and
while the action went right down to the final seconds , Penn was
able to escape with the victory.
Penn outshot Lafayette, 45-23, and forced Leopard goalkeeper
Andrijko Andrusko to make 15 saves. At the other end, freshman
Brian Feeney had four stops to gain the victory.
After starting the season with three home games, Penn is finally on
the road this week. The Quakers are at North Carolina Tuesday night
for a 7 p.m. start.
