DU 'Starting to Come Together,' Tierney Says

DENVER – University of Denver men's lacrosse sophomore Cameron Flint (Georgetown, Ontario) scored four goals and had an assist to lead the No. 16/17 Pioneers (1-1) to an 11-6 victory over Vermont (2-1) in the 2011 home opener Sunday afternoon at Peter Barton Lacrosse Stadium.
"Vermont is a good team, but we forced them to settle for some tough shots," said head coach Bill Tierney. "We were as good as we can be and as bad as we can be all in one game, but we are starting to come together. Our guys are still getting used to playing with each other and this was a good win for us."
Junior Alex Demopoulos (Canton, Ohio) grabbed his first goal of the season and had an assist for Denver, while sophomore Eric Law (Centennial, Colo.) tallied his first points of the season with two assists. Freshman Jamie Faus (Lakeville, Conn.) stopped 11 shots and recorded the first win of his college career.
Connor McNamara had two goals for Vermont and Geoff Worley had a goal and an assist. David Barton made 19 saves in the loss.
Defensively, senior Jeff Brown (Cohasset, Mass.) turned in an outstanding performance for the Pioneers as he limited Vermont's leading scorer Drew Philie to just one goal. Brown finished the day with three ground balls and three caused turnovers. Freshman Harley Brown (New Canaan, Conn.) led the way with five caused turnovers, while redshirt junior Brendan DeBlois (Narragansett, R.I.) finished with five ground balls and two caused turnovers.
Denver led Vermont in shots (42-26) and ground balls (39-26), and forced 21 turnovers on the day. The Pioneers also won 11-of-21 face-offs and were 20-of-23 on clears.
Denver fell behind 1-0 midway through the first quarter, but the Pioneers came roaring back to grab the 3-1 lead following goals from junior Patrick Rogers (Portland, Ore.), sophomore Colin Scott (Ridgefield, Conn.) and Flint.
Vermont scored to open the second quarter, but DU answered when sophomore Chase Carraro (Louisville, Ky.) scored. Following a Catamount goal, Flint scored his second of the afternoon with to 2:50 to play in the quarter and DU led 5-3 at halftime.
Junior Mark Matthews (Oshawa, Ontario) opened up the third quarter when he gave Denver a 6-3 lead less than a minute into the second half. Senior Andrew Lay (Denver, Colo.), Flint, senior Todd Baxter (Eden Prairie, Minn.) and Demopoulos all added to the Pioneers' lead in the third, while the Pioneers' defense held the Catamounts scoreless to take a 10-3 advantage heading into the fourth.
Flint scored the lone DU goal of the fourth quarter, his fourth of the game, while Vermont tallied three goals in the quarter making for the 11-6 final.
The Pioneers host the DU Face-Off Classic March 5-6 at Peter Barton Lacrosse Stadium. Classic action opens with the Air Force Falcons taking on Manhattan on Saturday at 11 a.m., while Denver will face Jacksonville at 1:30 p.m. MT. Classic action continues on Sunday with Air Force taking on Jacksonville at 11 a.m. and the Pioneers facing Manhattan at 1:30 p.m.
