Gibbons Helps Wojcik to Triumphant Debut

from press release

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. --  Co-captain Dean Gibbons scored three goals and John Doyle fired away the game winning score late in the fourth quarter to give the Harvard men's lacrosse team a 9-7 win over Canisius Saturday afternoon at the Soldiers Field Soccer/Lacrosse Stadium.

The game was the first men's lacrosse event contested on the new turf field and the win was the first for The Frisbie Family Head Coach of Men's Lacrosse Chris Wojcik'96 who returned to his alma mater last summer for his first head coaching position.

Gibbons struck first for the Crimson on a pass from Peter Schwartz with a tally five minutes and 40 seconds into the game. Classmate and co-captain Kevin Vaughn added the only other score of the first quarter less than four minutes later.

After Matt Hull's goal from Alex White put the Crimson up 3-0, Canisius tied the score with three straight scores, including a man-up goal with 9:20 left in the second quarter.

The Crimson scored back-to-back goals and the Giffs answered with two of their own in both the third and fourth period. Canisius tied the score at seven with eight minutes to play. Less than two minutes later, Doyle found the back of the net and Gibson added the insurance goal one minute and 22 seconds after that.

Harvard outshot Canisius, 44-20, and won the battle in ground balls with a 29-26 edge. The Giffs converted on 10-of-19 face-offs and stopped 13 Harvard shots.

Terry White had two scores for the Crimson and Jeff Cohen recorded one tally. Harry Krieger made eight saves in the net. Gibbons had a team- and career-high five ground balls.  Terry White and Ryan Alden each had two caused turnovers to pace the team.

The Crimson travels to Hofstra for its second contest of the year, March 5. Face-off is slated for 1 p.m.
