Baum's Six-Pack Leads Colgate Over Dartmouth
from press release
HANOVER, N.H. – Sophomore Peter Baum
scored six goals in the Colgate men's lacrosse team 13-8 win over
Dartmouth on Saturday afternoon. This was the team's first win of
the season.
Senior co-captain Andrew Mould and classmate Ben McCabe scored
twice each while freshman Jimmy Ryan, junior John Donnally and
senior co-captain Rob Bosco recorded one goal each for the
Raiders.
Dartmouth got on the scoreboard first at the 7:42 mark to take the
1-0 lead. Colgate (1-2) then answered back with two goals first at
the 5:53 mark and then again just six seconds later at the 5:47
mark, both from Baum, to take the 2-1 lead. Senior Jim Carroll had
an assist in the second goal. Still carrying their scoring
momentum, the Raiders struck again at the 4:31 mark, this time from
Mould, to extend their lead to two goals. Determined to reclaim its
early lead, the Big Green answered back with a goal in the last two
minutes of the period, to end the first 15 minutes of play trailing
Colgate 3-2.
After a productive first quarter, both teams came out determined to
get on the scoreboard first. Colgate found the net first in the
opening minute of play, this time with a shot from Ryan, to put the
score at 4-2. Not discouraged, the Big Green continued to search
for a goal, finding one three minutes later at the 11:07 mark to
reduce the scoring margin to one goal. The Raiders then picked up
their pace and were eventually rewarded with two more goals from
Baum in the closing minutes of the quarter to take a 6-3 lead
at half time. Bosco was credited with an assist in the second
goal.
The third period was similar to the second with Colgate jumping out
to an explosive start with a goal from Donnally at the 11:56 mark
to improve the Raiders' lead to 7-3. Two minutes later, Baum found
the net for the fifth time to put the score at 8-3 with help from
junior Patrick Campbell. Desperate to stay in the game, the Big
Green continued to play hard and soon found a fourth goal at the
4:14 mark to put the score at 7-4. Colgate then answered back with
a pair of goals from McCabe, both assisted by senior Dave
Tucciarone at the 4:01 and 2:26 marks, to give the Raiders a 10-4
advantage going into the final quarter.
Still hopeful, Dartmouth came out to an explosive start, scoring
three goals in a row in the first 3:48 of play to reduce the
scoring margin to three with a 10-7 score. Determined to keep their
comfortable lead, Colgate found the net at 9:19 mark from Bosco to
improve its lead to 11-7. The Big Green continued to play
aggressively in hopes of repeating its start to the period, but
despite finding a goal at the 5:40 mark, Dartmouth could not push
past the Raiders, who went on to score twice more courtesy of Baum
and Mould, who also had an assist in Baum's sixth goal, to win the
game 13-8.
