St. John's Players Get Big East Honors

QUEENS, N.Y. -- Two St. John's lacrosse players were named to the season-opening edition of the BIG EAST Weekly Awards, the conference announced today. Sophomore goalkeeper Jeff Lowman was selected as the BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week, while freshman Kevin Cernuto was tabbed for the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll.
In a 16-7 win over Holy Cross this past week, Lowman set a new career high with a save percentage of .695. He tied his career high with 16 saves, and helped the Red Storm defense kill off five of six Crusader extra-man opportunities.
A native of Millersville, Md., Lowman was named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll last season for his 16-save effort in a win over Rutgers on April 3, 2010.
Cernuto put together an impressive offensive display in his collegiate debut at Holy Cross. A native of Neshanic Station, N.J., Cernuto scored four goals on nine shots for a shooting percentage of .444. He also added three assists to finish with a game-high seven points.
St. John's will return home on Saturday, Feb. 26 to face No. 18/19 Yale. Face-off is slated for 1 p.m. at DaSilva Memorial Field.
