Hobart Scores Final Five to Beat Robert Morris
from press release
MOON TOWNSHIP, Pa. — Junior attackman
Chris Pedersen scored with 1:42 remaining in the Hobart lacrosse
team’s season-opener at Robert Morris this afternoon to lift
the Statesmen to a 9-8 victory. Pedersen, who finished with his
fourth career hat trick, capped Hobart’s rally from an 8-4
deficit with 14:31 remaining in the contest.
The Statesmen (1-0) never led in the first three quarters of the
contest, but never fell behind by more than three, until Trevor
Moore finished off his four-goal day with a marker 29 seconds into
the final stanza.
The Colonials (0-2) were whistled for an illegal body check a short
while later. Sophomore midfielder Tyler Smith, assisted by
first-year attackman Cam Stone (Jamesville-DeWitt/Syracuse, N.Y.),
took advantage of the man-up opportunity with 12:19 remaining in
the contest.
Three minutes later, Stone (1g, 2a) set the table for junior
midfielder Derek Akner’s first goal of the year to make it an
8-6 game. At the 6:25 mark, RMU was flagged again, this time for
pushing, and again Hobart seized the opportunity. Senior midfielder
Tim Bigelow scored unassisted with five seconds left in the
penalty.
Robert Morris made another trip to the penalty box on a slashing
call with 3:20 left and Bigelow (2g, 1a) again made the Colonials
pay, scoring off an assist from junior attackman Sam Miller (2a) to
tie the game and set the stage for Pedersen’s unassisted
game-winner.
In all, Hobart was 4-of-6 on the extra-man, while avoiding taking
single penalty. The Statesmen, behind junior Bobby Dattilo,
dominated the faceoff X, winning 16 of 21 restarts. Dattilo hauled
in seven ground balls, while senior long-stick midfielder Alex
Caton (McQuaid/Rochester, N.Y.) scooped up a game-high eight.
Hobart sported a 36-29 edge in GBs.
The Colonials led 3-2 at the end of the first quarter and 6-4 at
halftime.
In goal, senior Evan Kirk picked up his first career win with 12
saves. RMU’s Charles Ruppert made eight stops.
Hobart will be back in action on Saturday, Feb. 26, when the
Statesmen visit eighth-ranked Cornell. Faceoff is scheduled for
noon.
