Rutgers Opens Season With Pair of Games

PISCATAWAY, N.J. – The Rutgers men's lacrosse team will open its 2011 season at home this weekend as it hosts Wagner and Manhattan at the RU Turf Field.

Rutgers will kick off the season with a 3 p.m. contest against Wagner on Friday, Feb. 18. The Seahawks, who finished the 2010 season 1-14, are led by Will Macumber who is coming off a 21 point season in 2010.

Wagner, coached by Jason Rife in his fourth season, is 0-2 all-time against Rutgers including a 24-4 loss at Wagner last season.

The Scarlet Knights are back in action on Sunday, Feb. 20, when they welcome Manhattan to the RU Turf Field. The Jaspers, who are coming off a 7-9 season, are led by senior Justin Jensen who tallied 34 points a season ago.

Manhattan, which is 0-9 all-time against Rutgers, is coached by Tim McIntee in his 14th season with the program.

Rutgers, under the guidance of head coach Jim Stagnitta in his 10th season at RU, returns several key players including Brian Shemesh (Hillsborough, N.J.), Kory Kelly (Princeton, N.J.) and Mike Diehl (Flemington, N.J.) from a squad that finished the 2010 season with a 6-8 record and placed fifth in the BIG EAST.
