Hofstra, Card Top CAA Preseason Nods

from press release

RICHMOND, Va. -- Hofstra, already a preseason No. 9 national pick, was chosen as the unanimous favorite to win the 2011 CAA Men's Lacrosse Championship according to a vote conducted by all seven league coaches. The Pride edged out defending league champion and second-place Delaware in the poll. The Blue Hens were just one point ahead of third-place Drexel, while No. 4 Massachusetts garnered a first-place vote to come within two points of the Dragons. The league's coaches also selected Hofstra senior attacker Jay Card as the CAA's Preseason Player of the Year.

Hofstra, which opens its season next week against Colgate, earned all six possible first-place votes as coaches are not allowed to vote for their own team. Delaware, Drexel and Massachusetts were all within three points of each other in the polling and picked No. 2-4, respectively. Those same three schools are also among the preseason national Top-20 including No. 16 Massachusetts, No. 17 Delaware and No. 18 Drexel. Towson garnered 19 points, while Penn State and new head coach Jeff Tambroni picked up 12 points. Saint Joseph's, the league's newest member for the 2011 season, logged six points to round out the polling process.

Card, a First Team All-CAA selection each of the last two seasons and the league's Player of the Year as a sophomore in 2009, scored 31 goals and had a total of 53 points in 2010. The Caledon, Ontario native, who helped his squad to an at-large berth in the 2010 NCAA Championships, also earned Honorable Mention All-America honors as a junior. Card's teammate Jamie Lincoln and Penn State's Matt Mackrides complete the preseason attackers. Lincoln, another Honorable Mention All-America pick in 2010, scored 33 goals as a junior last season. Mackrides is the league's top returning goal scorer this season after logging 36 in 13 games last year.

Penn State's Nick Dolik and Hofstra's Brad Loizeaux highlight the Preseason All-CAA midfield quartet. Dolik was a 2010 All-Rookie and Second Team All-CAA selection, while Loizeaux earned Second Team honors last season. Delaware's Kevin Kaminski and Towson's Peter Mezzanotte round out the group of four. Kaminski notched 10 goals in 17 games for the Blue Hens last season, while Mezzanotte earned 2010 CAA All-Tournament honors after logging seven groundballs and six caused turnovers in the two-game span.

Drexel's Frank Tufano was the league's First Team All-CAA pick last season at the long-stick midfielder position and repeats this preseason in the same spot. Tufano led the Dragons last year with 15 caused turnovers and was part of a defense which limited foes to just 8.3 goals a game. Dan Cooney, who finished the 2010 season with a .547 face-off winning percentage for Delaware, occupies the league's preseason face-off specialist position.

All three of the Preseason All-CAA defensemen earned all-conference honors in 2010. Delaware's Pat Dowling was a Second Team selection in 2010 after earning First Team honors in 2009. Towson's Marc Ingerman and Drexel's Dana Wilber were both First Team All-CAA members in 2010. Ingerman picked up 13 groundballs and caused five turnovers in 2010, while Wilber forced 15 turnovers and garnered 49 groundballs for the Dragons last year.

The 2010 CAA Defensive Player of the Year, Drexel's Mark Manos, is this year's preseason goalkeeper. Manos, just a junior, had a .585 save percentage in 2010 and a conference-best 8.29 goal-against average in 15 contests.

The CAA Men's Lacrosse Championships are slated to get underway May 4 with semifinal action, as the title contest is slated for May 7.
