Yale Men Release '12 Preview
from press release
NEW HAVEN, Conn. - The 2011 Yale men's lacrosse team, picked to finish third in the Ivy by Inside Lacrosse's Face-Off Magazine, is in good position to defend the league title it shared last spring with Princeton, Cornell and Brown. The Bulldogs, ranked 19th in the USILA pre-season poll, return all three close defensemen from 2010, five of the top seven scorers and the starting goalie. Here is a Bulldog breakdown by position.
Junior Matt Gibson (26-18-44), the 2010 New England Player of the Year and an honorable mention USILA All-American, leads the attack once again. He will be joined by senior Brian Douglass (32-6-38), who led the team in goals last spring, and freshman and 2010 Nassau County Attackman of the year Brandon Mangan (Wantagh, NY/Wantagh). Also expected to see action this spring are junior Ben Gifford, sophomores Andrew Cordia (1-4-5), Deron Dempster (2-0-2) and Kirby Zdrill (1-1-2), and freshman Ryan McCarthy (South Glastonbury, Conn./Glastonbury).
Senior captain LSM Patrick Coleman was second on the team with 48 ground balls last year. Junior LSM Nicholas Leppla and freshman LSM Jimmy Craft (Darien, Conn./Brunswick School) will add depth behind Coleman. At defensive midfield, junior Michael Pratt (2-1-3) leads the way as a two-way middie. Four other players are battling for playing time alongside Pratt: Seniors Alfonso Costa, Chad Costello, Alex Forrey and freshman Jackson Logie (New Canaan, Conn./Deerfield Academy).
Junior Gregory Mahoney (21-1-22) led the midfielders in scoring and was second-team All-Ivy. All-New England pick Matt Miller (12-6-18), Colin Still (5-5-10), Mark Dobrosky (0-2-2), Robby Berner and senior Jack Flaherty also contributed to the league title. Sophomore Michael Lipin, Bryan Walker and Cole Yeager add depth to this unit. Class of 2014 members Jared DePalma (Manlius, NY/Christian Brothers Academy) and Alex Otero (Basking Ridge, NJ/Ridge) will also contribute.
All three starters from last season return in sophomores Michael McCormack (50 groundballs), an All-New England pick, Phil Gross (23) and Peter Johnson (26). Seniors Eric Gresham, Nicholas Leppla and Steve McLachlan will compete for playing time. Junior Lucas Aronson earned a starting job last year but was injured early and missed almost the entire season while classmate Michael Sweeney (13 gb) was very effective and helped break into the lineup successfully. Three freshmen: Jack Ambrose (Westport, Conn./Staples), Alex Moffit (Rancho Santa Fe, Calif./Cathedral Catholic) and Arthur Sonnenfeld (Baltimore, MD/Park School) round out what could be the team's deepest position.
Senior Johnathan Falcone (14 gp, .502 SP, 8.54 GAA) started in 13 of 14 games and played all but 17 minutes. Sophomore Peter Spaulding (1 gp) and freshman Jack Meyer (Manhasset, NY/Manhasset) are also competing for the starting job.
Sophomore Cole Yeager (12-20) and newcomer Dylan Levings (Massapequa, NY/Plainedge) will battle for the starting job.
