Presbyterian Tabs Gongas Acting Head Coach

from press release

CLINTON, S.C. - The Presbyterian College athletics department has announced that Mike Gongas has been named acting head men's lacrosse coach.

"Coach Gongas has done a wonderful job serving as our interim men's lacrosse head coach," Dr. Bee Carlton said. "He has led the team effectively as they have continued to work hard in conditioning and training for the upcoming season. He has also continued to recruit and to attract quality young men to the program and campus. I am confident that he can effectively lead this team in the upcoming competition season."

Gongas took over the capacity as interim head men's lacrosse coach on Sept. 2, 2009. Since that time, Gongas has worked with the team in all aspects, including coaching, recruiting, and financial planning with the budget.

A year ago, Gongas was the assistant coach under former PC head coach Jason Childs. Gongas was instrumental on the field and off, helping in all aspects of the job.

A 2007 graduate of Adelphi University, Gongas has extensive playing and coaching experience.

A native of Port Jefferson Station, NY, Gongas graduated from Comsewogue H.S. where he was a two time All League and All County honoree, a member of the Empire State team and was named All American, and All Long Island his senior year.

In the fall of 2007, Gongas signed a contract with the New York Titans, a professional indoor lacrosse team in the National Lacrosse League as well as being drafted and participating in training camp with the Long Island Lizards of Major League Lacrosse, the professional outdoor lacrosse league.

"I'm really excited about the opportunity," Gongas said. "The administration has given me the opportunity to fulfill my dream of becoming a Division I head coach and I want to thank them for giving me the chance to help take Presbyterian College lacrosse to the next step in its Division I transition. The team has worked really hard this fall and we are looking forward to keeping the momentum we have built for the 2010 season."

Gongas is looking to help the team improve on the 1-11 record from a season ago.

The Blue Hose open the season February 20 against Sacred Heart.
