Price Modern Lacrosse for Leukemia Fall Invitational
Date: Oct. 17
Site: Cedar Lane Regional Park, Bel Air, Md.
Lax fax: Admission charge. Pay as you enter the
park. More at lls.org/md.
Who’s in: Air Force, UMBC, Mount St.
Mary’s, St. John’s, Towson
Why you should go:
Having already raised more than $1 million for cancer research,
the event is poised to bring in even more money for the cause
through its 12th annual edition staged about a half-hour north of
Baltimore on a 110-acre site boasting a dozen fields and parking
for 1,000 cars.
Last year, the event raised $70,000.
“We’re hoping to up that to the $75,000-$80,000 range
this year,” Leukemia & Lymphoma Society of Maryland
spokesman Vince Fiduccia said.
Fiduccia said there is a possibility the field of teams could be
expanded. Each team features an honorary captain — a child
stricken with the disease — to whom each team dedicates its
season.
First impressions:
Towson’s Tony Seaman will bring in 16
freshman to his program, including six defensemen — US
Lacrosse All-American John Fennessey (Yorktown,
N.Y.) is the headliner of the group — and three goalies.
Having lost lat year’s attack to graduation, rookies
Matt Huges (Central Bucks East, Pa.), Sean
Fitzgerald (Crofton, Md.) and Paul DeBord
(St. Charles, Ill.) should get plenty of work, too.
With four-year starting netminder Jeremy Blevins graduated,
UMBC’s Don Zimmerman is bringing in only one
new goalie, Adam Cohen (Severn, Md.), to battle
with holdovers Kevin Kohri and Matt
Holman.
