No. 3 Maryland Routs Fairfield on Senior Day

COLLEGE PARK, Md. -- There was no more fitting
way for Senior Day to end for the No. 3 University of Maryland
men's lacrosse team than with senior Fran Gormley scoring the final
goal of the Terps' 17-4 rout of Fairfield on Saturday afternoon at
Capital One Field at Byrd Stadium.
Maryland (10-3) jumped on the injury-riddled Stags (8-5), who
played without three starters, early with six first-quarter goals
and never looked back.
Getting things started was the Terps' extra-man unit, which entered
the game as the top ranked unit in the nation and, fittingly, it
was a senior who got things going for the Terrapins. Senior Adam
Sear took a feed from junior Ryan Young and bounced a shot past
Stag goalie Joseph Marra, who was the nation's top goalie in both
goals-against average and save percentage coming into the game.
Sophomore Joe Cummings, who had his second career hat trick in the
game, scored back-to-back goals off feeds from junior Grant
Catalino and Young, respectively to push the lead to 3-0 with just
under 6:00 in the first.
The Terps' defense, which was smothering all day, keyed the next
goal with junior Ryder Bohlander stripping his man of the ball. He
then picked up the groundball and pushed it into the Terps'
offensive zone. Bohlander made a quick pass to junior Travis Reed,
who ripped a shot from the right wing to make it a 4-0 game at the
2:23 mark.
Senior Bryn Holmes won the ensuing face-off with Dan Burns picking
up the groundball. Burns pushed the ball up the right alley and
tried to feed Holmes with a tricky pass to the front of the crease,
but Holmes couldn't come up with it. The ball skipped through the
zone right to Catalino, who scooped it up on the left wing and in
one motion ripped a shot into to upper right corner of the goal for
a 5-0 Maryland lead.
Maryland's offense was clicking on all cylinders and it showed on
the Terps' sixth goal of the quarter, which is the most for the
Terrapins in any quarter this season. Maryland passed the ball
crisply around the perimeter with it eventually making its way to
Reed on the right goal line extended. From there, he laced a quick
pass across the crease to Young, who one-timed it into the
Fairfield goal.
The first quarter came to a close, but the Maryland onslaught
continued in the second quarter. Redshirt junior Eric Boyle scored
his first goal as a Terp in an unusual manner. Boyle ripped a hard
shot from the left alley that Marra got a piece of, but the ball
bounced out of his stick and as Marra went to keep it from
trickling into the goal he actually helped push it over the line,
giving Maryland a 7-0 lead with 13:31 left in the second.
Cummings finished off his hat trick with just over eight minutes
left in the first half when he one-timed a bounce shot from the
left goal line extended off of a nice cross-field pass from junior
Warren Hansen.
Fairfield finally got on the board at the 6:57 mark of the second
on a Brent Adams goal, but the Terps scored the final two goals of
the second quarter to push its lead to 10-1 at the half.
Catalino got a tricky, but easy score to make it a 9-1 game with
3:11 to go in the quarter. Fairfield was attempting a clear and
Marra brought the ball out of the box toward midfield. He tried to
lob a pass over Catalino, but he used all of his 6-foot-5 frame and
snagged the ball out of midair. He quickly recognized that Marra
was out of the goal and quickly shot from 35 yards out and the ball
took one bounce and hit the back of the empty net.
In a quarter filled with unusual goals, Maryland's final goal could
have been the most unusual with a long pole assisting on a goal
scored by another long pole. Senior Brian Phipps stopped a shot by
Fairfield's Ryan Mulford and junior Max Scmhidt cleared the
rebound. He got the ball to freshman long pole Jesse Bernhardt on
the break and Bernhardt pushed the transition opportunity. When
Bernhardt got into the Fairfield box he saw redshirt junior long
pole Brian Farrell free in the left alley and he quickly got the
ball to Farrell and Farrell ripped a low shot past Marra.
The halftime break did little to quell the Maryland offense's
momentum. Catalino scored his third of the day off an assist by
Young to make it an 11-1 game less than four minutes into the
third.
Maryland's second midfield got into the scoring act to make it 12-1
when redshirt sophomore Drew Snider slipped a pass to freshman John
Haus on the crease and Hause finished the play at the 8:49
mark.
Catalino finished his five-point day with his fourth goal with 4:43
left in the third. Reed fired a pass to Catalino on the left goal
line extended, leaving Catalino one-on-one with Charlie Cipriano,
who replaced Marra at the start of the third quarter. Catalino
faked high before finishing low, upping Maryland's lead to
13-1.
Snider was on the giving end of the next Terrapin goal, giving him
his first career multi-assist game. He sent a great pass to Young
on the right goal line extended, leaving him one-on-one with
Cipriano. This time Young faked low and finished high to give
Maryland a 14-1 lead.
Junior Scott LaRue closed out the Terps' 7-0 scoring blitz with a
runner down the left alley with 51 seconds left in the third.
Fairfield scored three goals to open the fourth quarter to make it
a 15-4 game, but the Terps would score the game's last two to make
it a 17-4 final.
Freshman Mike Poiter scored his first career goal at the 4:59 mark
off an assist by redshirt freshman Owen Blye.
Blye was again the giver on Gormley's goal to close things out,
sending a pass from behind the cage to Gormely on the left wing
where he ripped a shot into the upper right corner with 2:21 to go
in the fourth.
Maryland's defense was terrific all day, allowing just four goals,
which marks the fewest goals allowed in any game this season.
Phipps was not challenged much on the day, but finished with seven
saves, while allowing just one goal in 44:09 of work. Redshirt
sophomore Mark White played the final 15:51 of the game and
finished with two saves.
The starting close defense of Bohlander and juniors Brett Schmidt
and Max Schmidt were a big reason why the Stags' offense was unable
to get anything going. Brett Schmidt set a career best with five
caused turnovers to go along with three groundballs. Max Schmidt
had three groundballs and a caused turnover, while Bohlander had
two groundballs and two caused turnovers.
Maryland's long poles were also terrific. Bernhardt, Farrell and
senior Dan Halayko combined for four groundballs and three caused
turnovers.
Bryn Holmes continued to dominate the face-off X, winning 9 of 12
face-offs. Curtis Holmes also had a solid day facing-off with five
wins and three groundballs.
The game marked the final regular season home game for 10 Maryland
seniors: student assistant coach Patrick Hutchinson, student
athletic trainer Billy Langenstein, Gormley, Halayko, Dean Hart,
Bryn Holmes, Phipps, Chris Ready, Sear and Will Yeatman. The replay

Maryland will finish up its regular season next Saturday, May 8, in
Manhasset, N.Y., when it faces Colgate in the Indians Rock
Manhasset Day of Champions. The Terps and the Red Raiders are
scheduled for a 1 p.m. face-off.
Game Notes:
• With today's 17-4 win Maryland is now 2-0 all-time vs.
Fairfield.
• The victory is Maryland's 10th of the season, extending the
Terps' streak of 10+-win seasons to eight, which is the longest
streak in Division I men's lacrosse.
• Junior Grant Catalino's five points on four goals and one
assist gives him 36 multi-point and 28 multi-goal games for his
career.
• Catalino's five points moves him into sole possession of
22nd place on the school's all-time points list. He needs just one
point to tie Brendan Hanley (1985-88, 140) for the 21st spot.
• With two goals and three assists junior Ryan Young now has
35 multi-point, 13 multi-goal and 19 multi-assist games for his
career.
• Travis Reed's three points on one goal and two assists gives
him 28 multi-point and nine multi-assist games for his career.
• Joe Cummings' three goals is his second career hat trick and
gives him nine multi-point and six multi-goal games for his career.
