Muldoon Propels Brown into Ivy League Tournament
from press release
PROVIDENCE, R.I. – With the season on the
line, senior All-American attackman Thomas Muldoon scored 1:11 into
sudden death overtime to complete a hat-trick and lift #18 Brown to
a 10-9 victory over Dartmouth and gain a berth in next week's Ivy
League Playoffs.
The win lifts the Bears to 4-2 in the Ivy League, 8-5 overall,
staying in contention to win the Ivy League title. A Cornell
win over Princeton this afternoon (5:00 p.m.) would create a
four-way tie for the Ivy League Championship between Brown,
Princeton, Cornell and Yale at 4-2 in the league standings
Brown held a 9-8 lead on junior Andrew's second goal of the game
with 7:56 remaining. Dartmouth's Chris Costello sent the game
into overtime with an unassisted goal with 1:57 left in
regulation.
The Big Green got off the first shot in overtime, but Kip Dooley's
shot went wide and was backed up by the Bears, giving Brown
possession.
After Brown cleared, Muldoon went one-on-one and scored the game
winner, setting off a wild Brown celebration as Brown grabbed one
of four berths in the first ever Ivy League Playoffs, and kept its
Ivy title hopes alive.
“I just went to the goal,” said an ebullient Muldoon of
his game-winning score. “I struggled getting shots off
in the fourth quarter and just cleared my mind and took it to the
goal. Dartmouth is a great team and very dangerous
team. Both teams played exceptionally well today.”
Brown never trailed in the game and opened up an early 2-0
advantage following goals by Muldoon and junior David Hawley.
Dartmouth scored two of the game's next three goals to cut Brown's
lead to 3-2 after one quarter.
The Bears out-scored the Big Green by a 3-1 margin in the second
quarter to grab a 6-3 lead at intermission. Senior midfielder
Reade Seligmann, Muldoon and junior Matt Greenberg scored for the
Bears in the 3-1 spurt.
The two teams exchanged goals for the third quarter with
Dartmouth's Dooley scoring an unassisted goal late in the quarter
to cut Brown's lead to 8-6.
Senior Ari Sussman scored a man down goal for the Big Green and
Rhett Miller scored with 10:23 remaining to draw Dartmouth even for
the first time, 8-8.
In addition to Muldoon's game high three goals, Seligmann and
Feinberg scored two goals, and each added an assist for the
Bears. Junior Matt Chris registered nine saves in goal for
Brown.
The Big Green was led by Miller and Sussman with two goals each.
Fergus Campbell made five fourth quarter saves to finish with 13
saves for Dartmouth.
The Ivy League Playoffs will be held next week, May 7 and 9 at the
highest seed. First round games on Friday, May 7 will be at
5:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m.
