Siena Clinches Top Seed in MAAC
from press release
Senior goalie Brent Herbst made eight saves and led the Siena
men's lacrosse team to a 4-2 victory at Canisius Wednesday
afternoon, clinching the No. 1 seed in the Metro Atlantic Athletic
Conference tournament. It is Siena's 20th consecutive win against a
MAAC team and marks its fourth straight 10-win season.
This was the lowest scoring game Siena ever played in (six total
goals).
Siena (10-4, 7-0) allowed Canisius just 17 shots and 10 shots on
goal which are both season-bests.
Canisius (5-7, 4-3) took a 1-0 lead on Travis Gibbons' man-up goal
less than five minutes into the game. Jordan Loftus tied the game
with 40 seconds left in the first quarter and Ryan Duggan and Bryan
Neufeld tacked on goals to make it a 3-1 lead at halftime.
MAAC Preseason Player of the Year Adam Jones was held to one point.
He averages 3.09 points/game this season.
Siena's defense has dramatically improved throughout the season.
The Saints are allowing 6.29 goals in conference games and 4.33
goals the last three games.
The Saints wrap up the regular season on Saturday when they host
Manhattan at 1 p.m. The game is Senior Day and Alumni Appreciation
Day. The Class of 2009 will be recognized at halftime for winning
the program's first MAAC Championship and Siena's 11 current
seniors will be honored in a postgame ceremony.
