Quinnipiac Wins Connecticut Showdown
from press release
FAIRFIELD, Conn. – Senior attackmen Jon
Flood (Hauppauge, NY) and Timmy Katz (Freeport, NY) scored within a
47 second span of each other to bring Sacred Heart within two of
Quinnipiac with 6:25 remaining in the game. That was the
closest the Pioneers men’s lacrosse team would get, as they
gave up three more goals to fall to the Bobcats, 13-8, on Campus
Field Tuesday evening.
Quinnipiac raced out to a 3-0 lead by the end of the first quarter
with a pair of scores from junior Christian Haggerty, one on the
man-up, and one from classmate Jack Oppenheimer. The Bobcats took a
7-3 lead into the locker room as Haggerty added two more and
Oppenheimer scored his second before the half.
At the start of the third quarter, Katz scored his first of the
game, followed by a goal from classmate Joe Caridi (East Northport,
NY) to cut the QU lead in half. After Oppenheimer tallied his
third of the game, SHU senior Evan Morgan (Ashburn, VA) found the
back of the net, on a man-up opportunity, to bring the Pioneers
back within two.
The Bobcats opened the final frame with a goal two minutes in as
Haggerty, man-up, notched his fifth of the night. Sophomore
faceoff specialist Zach Pall won the ensuing faceoff and
immediately took the ball to the cage and scored.
Morgan finished the game with a pair of goals and a pair of
assists, while Katz also scored twice and collected an assist.
In net for Quinnipiac, junior Kevin Benzing stopped 10 shots in the
win. Senior Tom Trgo (N. Merrick, NY) made six saves and
allowed 13 goals.
Sacred Heart outshot the Bobcats for the game, 38-29.
Groundballs were even as both side picked up 37.
The Pioneers dropped to 3-9 on the year, while QU lifted its record
to 7-5. SHU returns to action for its regular season finale
against St. John’s on May 1 at 7:00 pm.
