UD Upsets No. 11 Drexel to Muddy CAA Race

from press release

NEWARK, Del. -- All-American Curtis Dickson netted three goals, John Austin and Nick Elsmo each scored twice, and the University of Delaware used a smothering defense to knock off another ranked Colonial Athletic Association opponent with a 10-6 triumph over No. 11 Drexel at Delaware Stadium Saturday night.

Delaware (7-6, 2-2 CAA), which won its second straight game, held Drexel to just one goal through the first 51 minutes of the contest and won going away to set up a key meeting at Penn State in the regular season finale next Saturday.

Should the Hens knock off the Nittany Lions, they would secure the No. 2 seed in the upcoming four-team CAA Tournament and earn a home berth for the semifinals.

Drexel, which was looking to lock up a post-season berth with a win, lost its second straight and fell to 9-4 (2-2 CAA)l. The Dragons had lost their previous three games by a combined total of six goals but never threatened against the Blue Hens in this game.

Dickson, who was named the Milt Roberts Most Valuable Player for the game, scored three goals and extended his streaks to 22 straight games with a goal and 53 straight with a point. He entered the game leading the nation in total points and upped his season goal total to 48.

Elsmo, a first-year transfer from Virginia, entered the game with just four goals all season but gave the Hens a big lift as he scored twice in a five-goal second quarter that lifted Delaware to a 5-1 lead at halftime.

Delaware goalkeeper Noah Fossner turned back 12 Drexel shots and held the Dragons to a single goal until the final nine minutes.

Colin Ambler led Drexel with two goals while Robert Church and Adam Dennis each scored a goal and dished out an assist.
