Loyola's 5-0 Second-Half Run Sinks Hobart

GENEVA, N.Y. -- Loyola University Maryland
scored four goals in less than 90 seconds to turn a 9-8 lead into a
13-8 advantage late in the third quarter, and the seventh-ranked
Greyhounds finished Saturday afternoon with a 17-12 victory at
Hobart in ECAC Lacrosse League action.
Hobart (2-10 overall, 0-6 ECAC) pulled within a goal, 9-8, on a
man-up goal by Sam Miller with 6:36 to play in the third
quarter.
Just over three minutes later, Scott Ratliff scored his first
collegiate goal on a clear by the Greyhounds (9-2, 6-0) with 3:29
to go in the frame. The goal ignited a Loyola rally that would span
the remainder of the third and first several minutes of the fourth
quarters.
Collin Finnerty took a Chris Basler pass and scored with 2:32 in
the third, and Matt Langan finished after a Finnerty assist with
2:24 on the clock.
Cooper MacDonnell added Loyola's fourth goal in 1:28 and third in
21 seconds, converting on a Josh Hawkins assist with 2:11 left on
the third-quarter clock. MacDonnell's goal gave the Greyhounds a
13-8 lead heading into the third quarter.
Taylor Ebsary added a goal 84 seconds into the fourth quarter to
complete a 5-0 run for Loyola.
Langan led all players with four goals and an assist for five
points in the game, while MacDonnell, Ebsary, Eric Lusby and
Stephen Murray each had two goals for the Greyhounds. Basler
recorded a career-high four assists in the game, and Finnerty had a
four-point effort with a goal and three assists.
Loyola's 5-0 run that spanned the third and fourth quarters was its
second stretch of scoring at least five unanswered in the game.
Miller put the Statesmen up 2-1 with 4:15 to go in the first
quarter, but Lusby tied the score with 44 ticks left in the
frame.
His goal was the first of six in a row by the Greyhounds, a span
that saw five different Loyola players score in just over five
minutes.
Chris Hurst scored 54 seconds into the second quarter, and Lusby
added his second of the game less than a minute later. Pat Byrnes
then scored his first of the season, and Murray tallied his first
of two. Langan added his second of four with 10;13 to go before
halftime, putting Loyola in front, 7-2.
Hobart, however, would score four of the next five to make it 8-6
in Loyola's favor 4:16 into the third quarter.
MacDonnell tallied an unassisted goal 1:06 later to make it a
three-goal Greyhounds lead, but the Statesmen would score the next
two.
After Loyola's 5-0 run in the third and fourth quarters, Hobart
scored two in a row to pull within four, 14-10, with less than
eight minutes to play.
Patrick Fanshaw and Ebsary scored, however, for the Greyhounds, to
push their lead back to six.
Loyola won 20-of-32 faceoffs in the game, led by an 18-of-28 effort
by John Schiavone.
Schiavone had a game-high 10 ground balls, helping Loyola to a
36-21 advantage in the statistical category.
Loyola also finished the game 15-of-15 in clearing attempts, the
second game in a row the Greyhounds have achieved a 100-percent
success rate on clears.
The Greyhounds close their ECAC schedule next Sunday, May 2, with a
1 p.m. (MT) game against Denver at Invesco Field in the Mile High
City.
