Daniello, Jamieson Pace 'Cuse over Providence
from press release
SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Seniors Chris
Daniello and Cody Jamieson made the final regular-season home game
of their careers a memorable one. The pair combined for 10 points
on Senior Day to lead top-ranked Syracuse (11-1, 4-0) to a 14-5 win
over Providence (0-12, 0-4) at the Carrier Dome.
Both players had three goals and two assists in the victory.
Jamieson’s five points matched his career high. For Daniello,
the performance added to his team-best scoring total and was one
short of his personal best. He now has 44 points (24g, 20a) on the
year, including 11 (7g, 4a) in the last two games.
The duo helped the hosts overcome a scrappy Providence club that
trailed 9-5 late in the third quarter before a 5-0 Syracuse run
sealed the game.
With the victory, the Orange finished the regular season with a
perfect 6-0 home record. It was also the team’s 14
consecutive win at the Carrier Dome, the second-longest active home
winning streak in the nation.
Providence stayed close by trying to slow the game down. The Orange
outshot the Friars, 43-15, in the contest, including a 10-1
advantage in the first quarter. The Friars routinely held the ball,
only taking shots when they were wide-open in an attempt to limit
Syracuse’s transition game.
Evan Helda (7-for-10) and Jackson Fallon’s (6-for-12) ability
to win faceoffs allowed the Friars to dictate the pace of the game.
The pair keyed a 14-9 Providence advantage at the X.
Despite the Friars’ slow-it-down style, Daniello opened the
game’s scoring with a behind-the-back goal at the 10:43 mark
of the opening quarter and Syracuse led 3-0 after the initial 15
minutes.
Providence’s Christopher Mahoney got the Friars on the board
1:14 into the second quarter to cut the Orange lead to 3-1, and
after goals by Daniello and junior Jeff Gilbert, kept Providence in
it with his second goal of the day with 8:27 to play in the first
half.
A goal by Colin Tigh trimmed the Orange lead to two (5-3) at the
5:01 mark, but junior Jeremy Thompson answered with a man-up score
off a pass from Jamieson to give the Orange a 6-3 halftime
lead.
Thompson’s goal ignited a 4-0 Orange run as the hosts stormed
out of the locker room, scoring three times in the first five
minutes of the third quarter to claim a 9-3 margin.
Providence stayed close on goals by Helda and Jake Nolan. Helda
tallied at the 4:18 mark of the third, and Nolan’s goal came
short-handed after a slashing call sent Pete Wujciak to the penalty
box. Nolan’s man-down tally trimmed the Orange advantage to
four (9-5) with 3:23 in the period, but it was the last time
Providence found the cage. Syracuse held the Friars scoreless for
the final 18:23 and scored five times in that span to put the game
away.
Daniello and Jamieson keyed the game-clinching run, combining to
score the first three goals in the scoring spurt. Overall, Daniello
had two points (1g, 1a) in the decisive stretch and Jamieson
recorded three (2g, 1a).
Syracuse converted on three of its four man-up chances against the
Friars and netted a pair of extra-man goals in the fourth quarter
as the Orange outscored Providence, 3-0, in the final period.
Junior goalie John Galloway played the first three quarters for
Syracuse and made four saves to earn the victory. It was the 42nd
win of his career, tying him with Duke’s Dan Loftus (2004-08)
for sixth on the NCAA Division I career wins list.
Galloway was replaced by senior Al Cavalieri, who played 13:33 and
registered two saves in his last regular-season home game. In
addition, walk-on goalie Nathan Farabee entered the game with less
than two minutes to play and made a save in his first career
appearance.
Mahoney’s two goals led the Friars. No one else had more than
one point in the game for Providence. Starting goalie Christian
Dzwilewski totaled 15 saves in a losing effort. He played the first
58:33 before being relieved by Frank Cicero.
The Orange can claim at least a share of the inaugural BIG EAST
Conference championship next weekend at Notre Dame. The Orange will
visit South Bend on Saturday, May 1 for a 7 p.m. tilt against the
Irish at Arlotta Stadium. The game will be televised live
nationally on ESPNU.
