Siena Wins Battle of MAAC Unbeatens
from press release
LOUDONVILLE, N.Y. -- Siena men's lacrosse
asserted itself as the team to beat in the Metro Atlantic Athletic
Conference with a 14-4 drubbing of Marist Wednesday afternoon. Both
teams entered with perfect 4-0 league records, but Siena used its
best overall performance of the season to cruise past the upstart
Red Foxes. Siena has won 18 straight games against MAAC teams.
Jordan Loftus (4), Ryan Duggan (3) and John Rogener (3) combined
for 10 goals and Siena's defense pitched a shutout through the
first 29 minutes of the game.
Junior defenseman Duncan Seale was sensational. He shutdown Corey
Zindel who averages 4.5 points (15th NCAA) and 2.5 assists (5th
NCAA) per game. Seale held him to one goal and one assist on three
shots. Seale finished with two caused turnovers and two ground
balls.
When called upon, Brent Herbst was solid between the pipes. He made
15 saves in the win.
Siena (8-4, 5-0) started fast, something that's been missing, and
led 6-0 before Marist (7-4, 4-1) could muster a goal. Conner Rice
broke up the shutout with 1:11 left in the first half. But Siena
answered with goals by Loftus and Duggan in the final minute.
Siena's man-down unit smothered Marist and killed all eight of its
extra-man opportunities. The Saints have killed the last 27 EMO's
dating back to the Providence game on March 27.
The Saints led 14-2 with six minutes remaining and then emptied its
bench. Bill Kelly made two saves in the final minute in relief of
Herbst.
The Saints return to action on Saturday when they play Mount St. Mary's in Emmitsburg, Maryland at 1 p.m.
