Denver Tops Quinnipiac for Fifth Straight Win
from press release
DENVER -- Freshman Cameron Flint (Georgetown,
Ontario) scored four goals to help the University of Denver men's
lacrosse team (8-4, 3-0 ECAC) to a 14-10 win over the visiting
Quinnipiac University Bobcats (5-4, 2-3 ECAC) on Sunday afternoon
at Peter Barton Lacrosse Stadium. The win keeps the Pioneers
undefeated in Eastern College Athletic Conference play and extends
their win streak to five games.
"We continue to find a way to win these tough games and I couldn't
be more proud of the way our team is responding," said head coach
Bill Tierney. "But, we really need to find a way to not have these
lapses and allow our opponents to get back into the games. Our
offense did a great job today of keeping us in this game and
responding each time Quinnipiac pulled to within one or two
goals."
Along with Flint's four goals, sophomore Alex Demopoulos (Canton,
Conn.) finished with his third consecutive hat trick, bringing his
season total to 26 goals. The attackman also finished with three
assists for six points on the day, extending his streak of
consecutive games with one or more points to 11 games.
Also scoring for Denver was sophomore Mark Matthews (Oshawa,
Ontario) and Patrick Rogers (Portland, Ore.) with two goals each,
while Dillon Roy (Denver, Colo.) John Dickenson (Dallas, Texas) and
Colin Scott (Ridgefield, Conn.) all added a goal apiece.
Senior goalie Peter Lowell (Freeport, Maine) finished with six
saves, recording his fifth-straight win and improving to 5-1-0 on
the season.
Denver held the advantage in shots (31-26), groundballs (32-28) and
face-offs (16-27 to 11-27).
Kevin Kelly led the Bobcats with three goals, while Christian
Haggerty finished with three assists and one goal for four points
on the day. Goalie Kevin Benzing made six saves on 31 shots.
Denver opened the game with three goals in the opening five minutes
as Matthews, Demopoulos and Rogers all scored. The Bobcats pulled
to within one with under three minutes left in the quarter as Kelly
and Mike Gast both scored. However, Scott closed the opening stanza
for the Pioneers, scoring his 10th of the season in the final 40
seconds.
After taking a 6-2 lead with 3:59 remaining in the second period on
goals from Flint and Rogers, the Bobcats once again cut the deficit
to one goal as Alex Marotto scored in the final 2:33 of the second
quarter, Kelly with a minute into the third quarter and Alex
DeAlmeida with 7:55 left in the third.
Less than five seconds later, DU's Matthews scored his second of
the game off a pass from freshman face-off man Chase Carraro
(Louisville, Ky.) to end the Bobcat's rally and give Denver a
two-goal cushion. Denver's Flint made it a three-goal game with
5:35 left in the third as he netted a Matthews' pass for the
Pioneers' second man-up goal of the game.
After allowing Quinnipiac's Billy Alessi to score an unassisted
shot with 4:01 remaining, Denver's Demopoulos scored off the
ensuing face-off as he converted a Carraro pass. Denver took a 10-6
advantage a minute later as Dickenson scored his sixth of the
season.
After both teams exchanged goals to close the third quarter, the
Bobcats opened the fourth quarter with two straight goals from Todd
Kaiser and Ted Diamond to cut the deficit to two goals, 11-9.
The Pioneers answered with three straight goals to take a 14-9 lead
before QU's Haggerty scored a man-up goal with 1:32 remaining in
the game.
Next up, Denver heads to Columbus, Ohio to face the Ohio State
Buckeyes on Saturday, April 17 at 11 a.m. MT. The game will be
