800: Syracuse Routs Albany for Milestone Victory

SYRACUSE, N.Y. – No. 2 Syracuse (7-1)
recorded the 800th win in its illustrious history on Saturday,
April 3 with a 15-8 victory against Albany (2-7) in front of a
Carrier Dome crowd of 5,229.
Senior Chris Daniello paced the Orange offense, tying his career
high with five points (2g, 3a) to help Syracuse join Johns Hopkins
(896 wins) as the only two Division I programs to reach the 800-win
plateau. The Orange also got two goals and two assists from junior
Josh Amidon, and three goals and one assist from classmate Stephen
Keogh in the win.
The Orange’s all-time record stands at 800-309-16 (.718)
since the inception of varsity lacrosse at Syracuse in 1916.
It was a milestone day for Keogh as well. He topped the 100-point
mark for his career with the performance and now has 101 points
(91g, 10a) in 44 career games. Keogh reached the milestone with a
goal in the third quarter, his second of the day, before tacking on
another goal in the final period.
In addition, senior Max Bartig tied his career best with three
goals, and junior Jovan Miller matched his personal high with three
points (2g, 1a) as Syracuse extended its current home winning
streak to 13 games. For Miller, it was his third straight two-goal
outing.
The Orange gained control of the game at the outset and never
trailed in the contest. Junior Jeremy Thompson got Syracuse on the
board 49 seconds into game. After a save by Albany goalie John
Carroll, Thompson forced a turnover and scored on a bounce shot
from seven yards out to give the hosts a 1-0 lead.
The score ignited the Orange, which scored the game’s first
four goals. Included in the run was a sensational behind-the-back
tally by Keogh off a rebound that made the score 3-0 with 7:55 to
go in the opening quarter.
Syracuse led 5-2 after the first period and extended its margin to
five (7-2) with 6:13 left in the first half on a man-up goal by
Amidon and an unassisted tally by Miller.
By halftime, Syracuse’s advantage had swelled to 9-3.
Albany’s Kyle Brunk scored 1:01 into the third quarter to
close the gap to 9-4, but Syracuse notched three of the
game’s next four goals to up 12-5 with eight minutes left in
the period.
The seven-goal margin was too much for the visitors to overcome.
Every time Albany began to chip away at the lead, the Orange
responded with a score of its own to keep the Great Danes at
bay.
Dave Brock paced the Great Danes with two goals and an assist.
Albany also got three points (1g, 2a) from Brian Caufield in the
contest.
Albany goalie John Carroll took the loss. However, he turned in a
solid performance, making 14 saves, including several stops on
one-on-one situations around the crease.
Syracuse held the advantage in shots (46-32), ground balls (45-28)
and benefitted from 25 Albany turnovers. The Orange also won 15 of
the game’s 27 faceoffs.
Senior Gavin Jenkinson led the Orange effort in the faceoff circle,
going 8-for-14. Thompson was 6-for-10. The duo had their hands full
with Albany faceoff specialist Matt Mackenzie, who took all 27
draws and won 12.
Next up for Syracuse is No. 5 Princeton on Saturday, April 10. The
Orange and Tigers will meet at the Big City Classic, a lacrosse
tripleheader that is the first public event at New Meadowlands
Stadium in E. Rutherford, N.J. Start time is 6:30 p.m. and the game
will be televised live nationally on ESPNU.
Game Notes: Syracuse is 8-0 all-time against Albany … The
victory was the Orange’s 16th straight against an unranked
opponent … It was also SU’s 13th consecutive win
against a team from the America East Conference … Head coach
John Desko has been associated with the program for 405 of its 800
all-time wins (35 as a player; 229 as an assistant coach and 141 as
head coach) … Rookie close defenseman Brian Megill recovered
a career-best five ground balls … Junior goalie John
Galloway made six saves to earn his 38th career victory …
Galloway was relieved by senior Al Cavalieri midway through the
fourth quarter.
