from press release
MOON TOWNSHIP, Pa. - April 3, 2010 - The Robert
Morris University Colonials earned their second straight win on
Saturday afternoon with a 13-7 victory over the Air Force Falcons
at Joe Walton Stadium. The Colonials led for the majority of play,
but the Falcons were able to stay within at least three goals of
RMU until the Colonials pulled away in the fourth quarter with four
unanswered goals.
With the win the Colonials improve to 7-2 overall, while the Air
Force drops to 1-7.
Junior Corbyn Tao-Brambleby (Coquitlam, B.C. / Western Reserve
Academy) led the Colonials with a season-high five goals, while
junior Trevor Moore (Port Coquitlam, B.C. / Riverside), junior
Keith Lee (Hudson, Ohio / Western Reserve Academy) and sophomore
Kiel Matisz (Stoney Creek, Ontario / Saltfleet) each added a pair
of goals and assists in the victory. Sophomore Kyle Buchanan
(Nepean, Ontario / John McCrae) led the contest with three
helpers.
Robert Morris opened up play with an unassisted goal by Lee at 1:08
in the first quarter. For the next 10 minutes both teams played
resilient defense holding each other scoreless. The Falcons
were finally able to break through when Vinny Sandtorv scored a
goal off an assist by Ridge Flick to knot the score 1-1.
The last few minutes of play saw a lot of action as the Colonials
scored three times in the final three minutes and the Falcons were
able to add one more goal. Robert Morris broke the tie within 14
seconds when Tao-Brambleby scored his first of the day off an
assist from senior Jordon Sealock (Airdrie, Alberta / George
MacDougal) to take back the one goal lead. Kevin Brownell
(Burlington, Ontario / Central) chipped in a goal with 2:37 left to
play and within the final minute of the quarter both the Colonials
and the Falcons found the net once more, bringing the score to
4-2.
Defense dominated the second quarter with only three goals being
scored throughout the entire 15 minutes. The Air Force closed the
gap to one when Ben Cullen got the ball past RMU goalie Charles
Ruppert (Long Island, N.Y. / Massapequa) at 6:25. However, goals by
Tao-Brambleby and Matisz at the 9:02 and 12:04 marks gave RMU a 6-3
advantage heading into the second half.
The Air Force did not waste any time in the third stanza and scored
with 42 seconds of the opening face-off to bring the score within
two. Moore responded for the Colonials by firing off two goals
shortly after off assists from Buchanan and Lee to put RMU up 8-4.
The Falcons closed out the third quarter with a goal by Adam
Paranka on an unassisted play to bring the Air Force within
three.
In the final stanza the Colonials proved why they have the number
one scoring offense in the nation with 16.13 goals per game by
outscoring the Falcons five to two. The Air Force's Carroll scored
a goal at 1:45, but the Colonials came up with four unanswered
goals to give them their largest lead of the contest at 12-6. Both
squads swapped scores once more before the end of regulation to
finalize the score 13-7.
The RMU duo of Ruppert and sophomore Dillon Pope (Smithtown, N.Y. /
Smithtown West) played solidly between the pipes with Ruppert
coming up with eight saves in the first half and Pope adding seven
in the second half. Air Force goalie Brian Wilson finished the
contest with 11 saves.
Both teams were relatively even from the face-off circle with RMU
winning 11 of 23 and the Air Force going 12-for-23. Only one extra
man opportunity was awarded throughout the contest to the Falcons
and they were unsuccessful on the attempt.
