Marist Stays Unbeaten in MAAC

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. - Led by hat tricks from
Matt Teichmann (Huntington, N.Y.) and Connor Rice (Penfield, N.Y.),
the Marist men's lacrosse team defeated Wagner 13-6 on Saturday at
Tenney Stadium at Leonidoff Field. The Red Foxes outscored the
Seahawks 8-2 in the second and third quarters to pull away for its
third straight win, improving their MAAC Lacrosse League record to
3-0.
Marist (6-2, 3-0 MAAC) opened the scoring at the 13:44 mark of the
first quarter on Aedan Herman's (Stafford, Va.) fifth goal of the
season. Junior attack Corey Zindel (Randolph, N.J.) then scored
with 11:37 remaining in the quarter to put the Red Foxes ahead 2-0.
Wagner (0-8, 0-2 MAAC) got on the board with 10:03 left in the
first quarter on a Cody Isdaner goal, assisted by Sean Travis.
Travis scored a goal of his own 37 seconds later to tie the game
2-2. Marist took the lead back with 6:14 to go in the quarter, as
Rice put a Zindel pass in the net to make the score 3-2.
The Red Foxes' one goal lead grew to two with 9:27 remaining in the
second quarter when Teichmann knocked a loose ball into the Wagner
goal to make the score 4-2. Mike McLachlan then scored 27 seconds
later for his first goal of the season, putting Marist ahead 5-2.
Teichmann and Rice added their second goals of the game to cap a
5-0 run for the Red Foxes, who took a 7-2 lead with 4:11 to go in
the half. The Seahawks added one more goal before halftime, as
Colin O'Rourke scored a man-down goal with 42 seconds left in the
half to make the score 7-3.
The two teams traded goals to open the third quarter, as a Will
Macumber goal kept Wagner within four 8-4. Marist then scored three
straight goals to end the quarter. Sharkey was the first to score
with 5:49 to go in the quarter, getting an assist from Rice. Bob
von Hoffman (Montclair, N.J.) then scored at the 5:02 mark to make
the score 10-4. Rice capped the run with his third goal of the
game, putting the Red Foxes' ahead 11-4 and clinched the win for
Marist.
Marist outshot Wagner 35-19 for the game, including a 15-4
advantage in the second quarter. The Red Foxes also had a 30-21
edge in ground balls. Wagner had five penalties totaling 3:30,
while Marist did not commit a single penalty in the game. Sam
Altiero (Randolph, N.J.) made nine saves for Marist in the win,
with Michael Gutkin making 10 for Wagner. Marist won 14-of-23
faceoffs, with senior midfield Matt Francis (Lansdale, Pa.) winning
11-of-17 to go with a game-high nine ground balls.
