Fairfield Downs Bellarmine for Fifth Straight

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - The Fairfield University
men’s lacrosse team earned its fifth straight victory with a
13-4 defeat of ECAC Lacrosse League host Bellarmine University on
Saturday. The win improves the Stags record to 6-2 overall
and 3-0 in league play, while the Knights fall to 6-4 on the year
and 0-2 in conference action.
Joseph Marra continued his strong play in net for the Stags, making
seven saves, against no goals allowed in his 30 minutes of
action. The Stags offense was equally as impressive in the
opening half, scoring four goals in each of the first two quarter,
to take an 8-0 lead into the intermission.
The Stags struck early against the Knights, with four goals coming
in the first 3:58 of the game. John Snellman got the offense
going at the 12:26 mark, putting home his first of the period, on a
pass from Max Trunz. Nick Baglio scored unassisted 61 seconds
later to give the Stags a 2-0 advantage. Snellman score
man-up, with an assist from Steve Golmont, at the 11:17mark.
Brent Adams snagged the ground ball on the ensuing face-off and
touched net 15 seconds later to give the Stags the 4-0
advantage.
Fairfield struck quickly in the second quarter as well, as Sean
Bannon picked up the ground ball from the opening face-off and gave
the Stags a 5-0 edge only seven seconds into the period.
Baglio scored his second unassisted goal of the game at the 10:06
mark and Sam Snow put home a pass from Kevin Peters with 9:12
remaining in the half to continue his streak of a point in all
eight of his collegiate games. Sixty-five seconds later Snow
fed Matt Plominski for his first goal of the game, and an 8-0
Fairfield advantage.
Bellarmine got on the board 4:02 in the second-half on a Derek
Hopcraft goal. Snellman got the goal back for the Stags at
the 7:43 mark, completing the hat trick off a pass from Snow.
Doug Kuring put his name into the box score with a goal 16 seconds
later, on a feed from Marshall Johnson, giving Fairfield a 10-1
advantage. Sean Doyle tallied two goals in the final 3:09 of
the third quarter as Bellarmine closed the gap to 10-3.
Adams found the back of the net for the second time 4:15 into the
fourth quarter for an 11-3 Stags lead. Logan Rausse scored a
man-up goal at the 10:18 mark, and added his first even strength
goal of the year with 7:06 to play to push the lead back to 10
goals, 13-3. Colton Clark wrapped up the scoring with an
unassisted goal for the Knights with 79 seconds to play in the
game.
Snellman, with three goals, and Snow, with a goal and two assists,
led the Stags offense with three points each. The Stags once
again had eight different players score a goal in the game Adams,
Rausse and Baglio each scoring twice, and Matt Plominski adding a
goal and an assist.
Charlie Cipriano was in net for the third quarter, with one save
and three goals allowed. Tommy Kralovenec minded the net for
the fourth quarter for the Stags, making two saves and allowing one
goal.
Fairfield was 2-5 on its man-up chances, while denying Bellarmine a
scoring chance in its four extra-man opportunities. The Stags
outshot the Knights 34-26 and had three more ground balls,
24-21
The Stags return home on Saturday, April 10 to host Loyola
University Maryland on Lessing Field at 1 p.m. Fairfield and
Loyola, which put its 3-0 ECAC record on the line Saturday against
Ohio State, are the only two undefeated teams remaining in the
ECAC.
