Lichtfuss Ties School Mark in Vermont Win
from press release
BURLINGTON, Vt. - Junior Derek Lichtfuss
(Lutherville, Md.) matched a Vermont single-game record with eight
goals to lead the Catamounts to an 11-8 victory against Binghamton
in America East men's lacrosse action on Saturday afternoon at
Moulton Winder Field. Freshman Drew Philie (Sandwich, Mass.) added
eight assists as Vermont improved to 2-7 (1-0 America East) with
the win.
Lichtfuss' eight goals are the most in a game since Trevor Wagar
'08 scored eight times in a 9-6 win at Holy Cross on April 22,
2008. Philie's eight assists were one shy of matching the UVM
single-game record set by Scott Montgomery '86. Montgomery had nine
assists on three occasions with the last coming on March 23, 1986
against Ohio State.
Sophomore Tom Frasca (Medfield, Mass.) went 15-for-23 on face offs
and junior Liam Thomas (Spring Lake Heights, N.J.) and freshman
A.J. Masson (Newmarket, Ont.) added goals for the Catamounts.
Frasca also had a team-high eight ground balls.
Binghamton (2-7, 0-1 America East) was led by freshman Matt
Springer and senior Jeff Rurey who each scored twice.
Vermont jumped out to a commanding 5-1 lead in the opening quarter
behind four goals by Lichtfuss all of which were assisted by
Philie.
Springer and Rurey each scored early in the second quarter to cut
the deficit to 5-3 but the Bearcats would never get closer.
Lichtfuss scored the final two goals of the second quarter
including one with just 3 seconds remaining until halftime. He also
scored the first goal of the third with 11:59 remaining in the
quarter to make it 8-3 Catamounts.
Sophomore David Barton (Hanover, Mass.) finished with 10 saves for
UVM and junior Max Gradinger (Rancho Santa Fe, Calif.) had five
ground balls.
The victory for the Catamounts ended a six-game losing streak
against the Bearcats dating back to 2004.
