Rice Right On in Marist's MAAC Victory

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – Led by a career-high
five goals and three assists from freshman attack Connor Rice
(Penfield, N.Y.), the Marist men’s lacrosse team defeated the
Saint Joseph’s Hawks 15-9 Saturday afternoon at Tenney
Stadium at Leonidoff Field. Junior attack Corey Zindel (Randolph,
N.J.) had six points on the day on four goals and two assists.
Marist (5-2, 2-0 MAAC Lacrosse League) got off to a good start,
getting a goal from Ryan Sharkey (Westfield, N.J.) at the 11:20
mark of the first quarter. Saint Joseph’s (0-9, 0-2 MAAC)
then won the ensuing faceoff, playing the ball into its own end.
Rice then forced Hawks goalie Chase Stewart to turn the ball over,
with Zindel picking up the ball and scoring on an open net with
11:07 to go in the quarter to put the Red Foxes up 2-0. Saint
Joseph’s got on the board at the 9:40 mark of the first on a
Joey D’Avanzo goal, making the score 2-1. Marist outshot the
Hawks 7-3 in the opening 15 minutes, winning 3-of-4 faceoffs.
The Hawks tied the game at 2-2 38 seconds into the second quarter
as Sean Dunn found the back of the net. Saint Joseph’s had a
chance to take the lead with an extra-man opportunity at the 12:55
mark, but Matt Dougherty’s shot was saved by Sam Altiero
(Randolph, N.J.). Marist then cleared the ball into Hawks territory
as Jim Marks (Camillus, N.Y.) fed Rice for his first goal of the
game, a man-down goal, with 12:26 to go in the half. Saint
Joseph’s tied the game 4-4 with 6:48 to go on goals by Scott
Cullinan and Sean Evans. The Red Foxes took the lead back with 2:28
to go in the second quarter as Aedan Herman (Stafford, Va.) scored
his fourth goal of the season to put Marist ahead 5-4. Rice then
scored on an extra-man opportunity with 1:25 to go to make the
score 6-4, which held until halftime.
Marist grew its lead to three early in the third quarter, as Rice
scored his third goal of the day from Zindel at the 11:47 mark. The
Hawks then scored three straight goals within a span of 3:16 to tie
the game 7-7. The Red Foxes answered Saint Joseph’s run with
four goals of their own. Zindel, Matt Teichmann (Huntington, N.Y.),
Sharkey, and Rice all scored in succession to put Marist ahead 11-7
going into the fourth quarter.
The Hawks got on the board first in the final period, as Kyle
Williams put in an Artie Marrapese pass to make the score 11-8 with
13:51 to go. This would be as close as Saint Joseph’s would
get. Bob von Hoffman (Montclair, N.J.) scored 1:08 later, with an
assist from Rice, to put the Red Foxes ahead 12-8. Zindel then
scored his fourth of the game from Teichmann to make the score 13-8
with 10:04 to go in the game. The Red Foxes then got goals from
Rice and Nick Piotti (Ho-Ho-Kus, N.J.) to go ahead 15-8 with 7:50
remaining.
Marist outshot Saint Joseph’s 35-28 for the game and also
held a 31-25 edge in ground balls. Matt Francis (Lansdale, Pa.) won
15-of-25 faceoffs for the Red Foxes, who were 16-for-28 in the
game. Francis also had a game-high eight ground balls, with Nick
Armstrong (Kings Park, N.Y.) adding four. Altiero had 11 saves for
Marist, while Stewart had eight for the Hawks.
The Red Foxes return to action on Saturday, April 3 when they host
the Wagner Seahawks at 3 p.m. at Tenney Stadium at Leonidoff Field.
