Ohio State Men Rally to Top Quinnipiac
from press release
COLUMBUS, Ohio -- The Ohio State men's lacrosse
team came back from a four-goal third-quarter deficit to down
Quinnipiac, 10-8, in an ECAC game Saturday in Hamden, Conn. Buckeye
freshman Logan Schuss led the squad, posting six points (2g, 4a),
including two goals and three assists on five-consecutive tallies
in the third and fourth quarters as Ohio State fought back to tie
the game and take the lead.
"Anytime you are down four goals in the third quarter on the road
it is a gutcheck," Nick Myers, Ohio State head coach, said. "It was
great to see the men respond and score seven unanswered to
ultimately earn the W."
Ohio State, now 5-4 on the year and 2-1 in the ECAC, trailed 2-1
after the first quarter and 4-2 at halftime. After Ohio State drew
within one (4-3) early in the third quarter, Quinnipiac (4-2, 1-2
ECAC) went on a three-goal run in just over three minutes to take a
7-3 lead with 7:01 left in the third quarter. The Buckeyes then
scored seven-consecutive goals to tie the game at 7-all with 10:44
left in the fourth quarter and take the lead for the first time
with 6:50 remaining in regulation.
Freshman Jeff Tundo had a hat trick in the game, with senior Mario
Ventiquattro scoring twice and adding an assist. Junior Bryce
Woodson had two helpers, while senior goalie Brandon Freeman made
15 saves, including six in the fourth quarter.
Quinnipiac led 2-1 after the first quarter. Jack Oppenheimer opened
the scoring at 12:19 of the first before Tundo scored man-up,
assisted by Ventiquattro, at 6:42 to tie the game. Christian
Haggerty responded with a man-up goal at 2:48 to put the Bobcats
ahead again.
The Bobcats' Todd Kaiser scored 1:49 into the second quarter to
give QU a 3-1 lead. Schuss found Tundo for his second man-up goal
of the game at 11:23, drawing the Buckeyes within one (3-2).
Oppenheimer then scored less than two minutes later (9:53) to
extend the lead to 4-2. Neither team was able to score the rest of
the quarter, sending the squads into halftime with the Bobcats
holding a two-goal advantage.
In the third quarter Alexander found junior Paul Beery for a goal
at 12:02 to make it a one-goal game (4-3) before the Bobcats went
on a three-goal run to take a 7-3 lead. Garett Kerr scored at 10:09
and Kaiser followed man-up 43 seconds later, with Oppenheimer
continuing the run with a tally at 7:01.
The Buckeyes, down four, then scored the next seven goals to take
the lead. In the third quarter Schuss set up Ventiquattro at 3:48
before scoring unassisted at 2:41, making it a 7-5 game. Schuss had
a hand in the first three goals of the fourth quarter, assisting on
a Ventiquattro man-up tally at 11:25 and a goal from senior James
Green at 10:44 that tied the game at 7-all before scoring a goal of
his own, assisted by Woodson, at 6:50 to put the Buckeyes in the
lead for the first time (8-7). At 4:22 Alexander tallied for a
two-goal Buckeye edge and Tundo completed his hat trick, off an
assist from Woodson, with 3:04 to play. The final goal of the game
came from Oppenheimer at 1:30 to end the Buckeye run and make the
final 10-8 in favor of Ohio State.
Freeman had 15 saves in the game while playing all 60 minutes, with
six in the fourth quarter as the Buckeyes rallied to win.
Quinnipiac's Kevin Benzing had 10 stops in the loss.
There were 12 penalties called in the game and each team scored
three man-up goals - Ohio State was 3-for-5 and Quinnipiac was
3-for-7.
