Sacred Heart Doubles Up Wagner, 10-5
from press release
STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. – The Wagner College
men’s lacrosse team jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead but the
Seahawks were unable to sustain the momentum as Sacred Heart came
back to register a 10-5 victory.
With the loss, the Seahawks fall to 0-6 on the season while the
Pioneers improve to 2-5.
Senior midfielder Pete Blackmer (Marcellus, NY/Marcellus) scored
the first goal of the game with 9:30 left in the first quarter. At
the 6:20 mark of the first quarter, sophomore attackman Mike
Scheerer (West Chester, PA/Bishop Shanahan) put the Seahawks on top
2-0. The Pioneers then rattled off three straight goals to make it
a 3-2 game en route taking a 6-3 halftime lead.
With the Seahawks trailing 9-3 after the third quarter, Wagner drew
to within 9-4 on a blast from freshman midfielder Colin
O’Rourke (Worcester, MA/St. John’s Shrewsbury) off a
pretty feed from fellow freshman attackman Cody Isdaner (Gladwyne,
PA/Episcopal Academy). Scheerer then notched his second goal of the
game with 7:20 left to play to make it a 9-5 game. That is as close
as the Seahawks would get, however, as SHU’s Chris Casey
scored the final tally of the game with 1:25 left to fashion the
final score of 10-5.
Casey, Jon Flood and Bryan Badolato scored two goals apiece to lead
the Sacred Heart cause while goalie Tom Trgo had 11 saves while
Wagner’s senior goalie Michael Gutkin (Freehold, NJ/Freehold
Township) came up with seven saves.
Sacred Heart out-shot Wagner 34-28 and held a slim 25-22 edge in
ground balls. The Pioneers also won 11-of-19 faceoffs. The man-down
defensive units for each team were stellar as Sacred Heart was just
1-of-7 on extra man opportunities while Wagner was 1-of-3 on
EMOs.
Wagner is next in action on Saturday, March 27 when the Seahawks
begin MAAC play by hosting Mount St. Mary’s in a 1:00 pm
faceoff.
