Fairfield Tops Ohio State for Third Straight

FAIRFIELD, Conn. - The Fairfield University
men’s lacrosse team won its third consecutive game, defeating
The Ohio State University 10-8 Tuesday night at Alumni Stadium in
the ECAC Lacrosse League opener for both squads. With the win
the Stags improve to 4-2 on the year, 1-0 in league play, while the
Buckeyes fall to 4-4 overall and 0-1 in conference action.
Eight different Stags touched net on the night with Matt Plominski
(Port Washington, N.Y.) and Kevin Peters (Darien, Conn.) both
scored twice on the night, while Sam Snow (Bainbridge, Wash.)
tallied a goal and two assists for three points. Joseph Marra
(Smithtown, N.Y.) made 10 saves, his third consecutive game with
double-digit saves, to earn the win in net for the Stags.
Fairfield held a 4-3 halftime advantage and extended the advantage
to 5-3, 1:53 into the second-half when Ryan Mulford (Crownsville,
Md.) put home a pass from Doug Kuring (New Milford, Conn.).
Logan Schuss (Delta, British Columbia) got the tally back for the
Buckeyes with his second goal of the evening at the 11:23 mark of
the quarter. The Stags would net the next two goals with Plominski
scoring a Snow pass at 8:19 and Snow scoring unassisted at the 7:17
mark.
The Stags 7-4 advantage lasted just under four minutes until Schuss
touched net for the third time, unassisted, with 3:21 to play in
the third quarter. He got the Buckeyes within a goal 49
seconds later when he fed Mario Ventiquattro (Carthage, N.Y.) for a
man-up goal, making the score 7-6. The Stags put the lead
back to two,8-6, when Peters scored an unassisted goal with four
seconds remaining in the perior.
Plominski scored the eventual game-winning goal 5:45 into the
fourth quarter, putting home a pass from Brent Adams (Norwalk,
Conn.), for a 9-6 advantage. The Buckeyes came on once again, this
time with a goal and an assist from Dominique Alexander (Baldwin,
N.Y.). He scored his only goal of the game, unassisted, at
the 7:34 mark and then fed James Green (Doylestown, Pa.) 90 seconds
later to get Ohio State to within a goal, 9-8. Marshall
Johnson (Canandaigua, N.Y.) gave Fairfield an insurance goal, on a
pass from Nick Baglio (Brightwaters, N.Y.) with 3:49 to play.
Five Stags had two points in the game, with Kuring, Baglio and
Adams, each tallying a goal and an assist in the game. John
Smellman (Norwalk, Conn.) also had an assist for Fairfield, which
had six assists on its 10 goals.
Schuss led all scorers in the game with four points, while Green
finished with two goals and an assist for the Buckeyes.
Brandon Freeman (Salem, N.H.) started and made 14 saves in net for
the Buckeys, allowing nine goals in his 50:45 of action. Ryan
Brant (Silver Spring, Md.) played the final 9:15 in goal for Ohio
State, allowing one goal.
The game marked the beginning of the Stags fifth season in the ECAC
Lacrosse League and the first time that Fairfield did not open play
against Rutgers. The Stags are now 5-0 in the season opening
conference game since joining the ECAC for the 2006 season.
The Stags outshot the Buckeyes, 37-29, with a 12-4 edge in the
third quarter of play. The Stags also finished with a ground
ball advantage, 30-26, and won 16-22 face-offs in the
contest. Steve Golmont (Martinsville, N.J.) won 15 of those
face-offs for the Stags. Both teams cleared the ball well,
Fairfield 16-18 and Ohio State, 11-12, while taking care of the
ball, with the Stags committing 15 turnovers and the Buckeyes just
