Bellarmine Answers Last in Shootout Victory

LOUISVILLE, Ky.-- The Bellarmine University
lacrosse team came up with eight fourth quarter goals to blow past
the Colonials of Robert Morris University 18-15 in an NCAA Division
I non-conference matchup today at Owsley B. Frazier Stadium.
Entering the final period, Bellarmine (5-3) faced a four-goal
deficit at 14-10, but put up seven straight goals to take control
of the game.
Robert Morris (5-2) came in with the No. 1 scoring offense in the
country, averaging 16.6 goals per game, and the game promised to be
a high-scoring affair from the outset as Kiel Matisz found the back
of the net for the Colonials just 43 seconds into the
game.
It was the home team, however, that would rule the opening quarter,
registering six goals in the first 15 minutes. Robert Morris
trimmed the lead to 6-3 as Corbyn Tao Brambleby scored with just
one second remaining in the period.
The second quarter was dominated by the visitors as Robert Morris
roared back to take a 10-8 lead with 4:08 left in the first
half. The Knights got a goal from Derek Hopcroft to pull
within one at the half.
Bellarmine’s Chase Williams scored just 29 seconds into the
third period to knot the score at 10 before the Colonials reeled
off four straight goals to end the period up by four.
The Knights started their 7-0 run in the final period when Sean
Doyleconverted a pass from Luke Actonto score 44 seconds into the
quarter. Bellarmine pulled even at the 6:56 mark as
senior midfielder Jarrett Davis scored off an assist from
Williams. Sophomore Austin Bright gave Bellarmine the lead
for good when his goal with 3:44 remaining made the score
15-14.
Williams was Bellarmine’s offensive leader on the day with
seven points (4 goals, 3 assists). The Colonials were led by
Matisz with three goals and three assists.
Bellarmine freshman goalie Dillon Ward picked up his first
collegiate win, working the final two periods and registering four
saves. Dillon Pope worked the full 60 minutes for RMU and was
saddled with the loss.
Bellarmine returns to action on Saturday, when they host
Presbyterian College in a 1 p.m. contest.
