Marist Finds Winning Knack in Overtime... Again

LEXINGTON, VA. - For the second time this season, the Marist men's lacrosse team won an overtime game with an 8-7 win at Virginia Military Institute on Saturday in both team's MAAC Lacrosse League opener. Senior Bob von Hoffman (Montclair, N.J.) scored the game-winning goal with 2:51 remaining in overtime, his only goal of the game to go with an assist.
Matt Teichmann (Huntington, N.Y.) led the Red Foxes with three goals, adding an assist for four points. Connor Rice (Penfield, N.Y.) and Corey Zindel (Randolph, N.J.) each had two points. Rice scored two goals while Zindel had a pair of assists.
Marist (4-2, 1-0) got off to a strong start as von Hoffman assisted on a Teichmann goal 1:33 into the game. VMI (2-6, 0-1) got on the board with 6:41 to go in the opening quarter as Colin Bosse scored his first goal of the game. The Keydets then took a 2-1 lead with 5:57 to go as Tim Moran found Keith Long for an extra-man goal. VMI outshot the Red Foxes 10-3 in the first quarter, but Marist would return the favor in the second quarter.
The Red Foxes outshot VMI 10-9 in the second, as Rice scored back-to-back goals at the 12:53 mark and the 10:55 mark to give Marist a 3-2 lead. Late in the quarter, Teichmann scored back-to-back goals in the last two minutes to put the Red Foxes ahead 5-2. All told, Marist outscored the Keydets 4-0 to end the first half and won all five faceoffs in the second quarter.
For as well as Marist played in the second quarter, VMI was almost as good in the third quarter. The Keydets won 4-of-5 faceoffs and held the Red Foxes off the scoreboard. Bosse scored his second goal of the game with 12:55 remaining in the third to make the score 5-3. Jacob Weimer then scored with 1:28 left in the quarter to get VMI within one, 5-4. Bosse put in his third goal with 46 seconds remaining in the quarter to tie the game 5-5 going into the fourth quarter.
Freshman Aedan Herman (Stafford, Va.) broke the tie with 12:31 to go in the fourth quarter, with his goal giving Marist a 6-5 lead. The Keydets responded with goals from Bosse and Moran within a span of 1:18 to put them ahead 7-6 with 8:51 to go in regulation. Ryan Sharkey (West Field, N.J.) tied the game 7-7 with his goal at the 2:55 mark of the fourth quarter. VMI had a chance to win the game in regulation, but a Long shot with 1:39 to go was saved by Sam Altiero (Randolph, N.J.).
Marist won the faceoff to start overtime. Sharkey had a chance to win the game for the Red Foxes 15 seconds into overtime, but Keydets goalie Sean McCoy made a save. Then, with 2:51 to go von Hoffman got a pass from Teichmann and put the shot past McCoy, giving Marist an 8-7 win.
VMI outshot Marist 33-28 and also held a 26-19 advantage in ground balls. Altiero had nine saves for Marist, with McCoy notching nine saves for the Keydets. Matt Francis (Lansdale, Pa.) won 11 of 18 faceoffs for Marist.
Marist returns to Tenney Stadium at Leonidoff Field on Saturday, March 27 to take on Saint Joseph's at 1 p.m. The game starts a three-game homestand for the Red Foxes.
