No. 11 Harvard Surges in Second Half

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – The 11th-ranked
Harvard men’s lacrosse team owned a 7-2 advantage in goals in
the second half, as the Crimson topped Colgate, 11-8, in a
non-conference matchup at Cumnock Turf Tuesday afternoon.
Kevin Vaughan netted three goals and contributed an assist, while
Jeff Cohen and Jason Duboe added two goals each.
Alex White and Christian Oberbeck won six faceoffs apiece, while
White paced the team with six ground balls. Harvard
goalkeeper Christian Coates earned his second win of the season,
making six saves, all in the second half. Harry Krieger
started the contest, recording five saves. With the win,
Harvard improves to 4-1 for the third straight year, while Colgate
falls to 1-5.
After the Crimson built a 3-2 lead in the first quarter, Colgate
went ahead, 4-3, on a man-up goal at 10:13 of the second quarter by
Ben McCabe. Duboe knotted the game less than three minutes
later at 7:18, but the Raiders tacked on two more scores, to take a
6-4 lead into the half.
In the third, Vaughan notched his first of three goals in the
quarter at 13:08, beginning a six-goal run for the Crimson.
Following Vaughan’s initial tally, Evan Roth scored the first
goal of his career of a faceoff at 12:55. Vaughan netted two
more goals in the quarter as Harvard carried an 8-6 lead entering
the final frame. Dean Gibbons and Cohen capped the scoring
run with a goal apiece in the fourth quarter, making it a 10-6
contest in favor of the Crimson.
Harvard kept Colgate off the scoreboard for nearly 32 minutes of
action before the Raiders finally got a goal with 2:42
remaining. The Crimson won 13-of-22 faceoffs on the afternoon
and led in ground balls, 23-19. Harvard also outshot Colgate,
38-29.
Harvard will host No. 17 Brown at Harvard Stadium Saturday at 3
p.m.
