Rutgers Overcomes Delay, Beats Penn State
from press release
PISCATAWAY, N.J. –The Rutgers men’s
lacrosse team overcame extreme rainy and windy conditions to defeat
Penn State by a 7-4 score Saturday afternoon at the RU Turf Field.
The game was delayed two hours in the second half after lightning
struck the area.
Senior midfielder Gerhard Buehning (Essex Fells, N.J.) and
sophomore midfielder Michael Diel (Flemington, N.J.) each scored
two goals. Senior attackman Tad Stanwick (Baltimore, Md.), junior
attackman Kory Kelly (Princeton, N.J.) and senior attackman Adam
Goldberg (Fayetteville, N.Y.) all scored a goal.
Senior midfielder Justin Pennington (Flemington, N.J.) dished out a
game-high three assists for Rutgers (3-1).
Freshman goalie Rudy Butler (Belle Mead, N.J.) earned his third
victory by snatching 11 saves and six ground balls. Butler entered
Saturday’s contest with nation’s third-best
goals-against average.
“In 26 years (being in lacrosse) that weather was the worst,
with the consistency of the rain and conditions,” said
Rutgers head coach James Stagnitta. “I thought our guys
persevered through it all. I told them after the two-hour delay
that we needed to make a run. We had to do something to gain some
separation. I thought we played a pretty good first half, but had
nothing to show for it on the scoreboard.
“I told them once we get back out there we have to make a
statement and they did,” continued Stagnitta. “Kory
(Kelly), Hunter (Burnard), Gerhard (Buehning), (Justin) Pennington
and (Michael) Diel really made some things happen.”
