Quinnipiac Hammers Providence 12-2
from press release
HAMDEN, Conn. - Junior Christian Haggerty (West
Nyack, N.Y.) scored twice and dished out four assists, both game
highs, as the Quinnipiac University men's lacrosse team upended
Providence, 12-2, Saturday afternoon at a rain-soaked Quinnipiac
Field Hockey & Lacrosse Turf Field. Fellow junior Jack
Oppenheimer (Conshohocken, Pa.) added two goals and an assist as
the Bobcats improved to 3-1 on the season. The loss dropped the
Friars to 0-3.
Kevin Kelly (Redding, Conn.), Peter McNichols (Norwalk, Conn.), Ted
Dimond (Marblehead, Mass.), Mike Gast (Grand Rapids, Mich.), Billy
Alessi (Branford, Conn.), Alex Marotto (South Windsor, Conn.), Todd
Kaiser (Summit, N.J.) and Jake Emms (Victoria, British Columbia)
also added one goal apiece for the Bobcats, while Alex DeAlmeida
(Point Pleasant, N.J.) and Kelly contributed assists.
Kevin Benzing (Severna Park, Md.) improved to 3-1 with the victory
for the Bobcats, allowing just two goals, one against a man
advantage, while making seven saves in 52:55. Jamie Prudden
(Andover, Mass.) and Tim Yost (Bloomfield Hills, Mich.) also saw
action in the closing minutes for the Bobcats. Prudden made one
save in 4:18, while Yost didn't face a shot in the final 2:47.
Tim Finnegan took the loss for the Friars, allowing one goal in the
first 7:20 before being pulled. He made one save. Frank Cicero
played the remainder of the half and into the third quarter, giving
up six goals and stopping six shots before giving way to Christian
Dzwilewski. Dzwilewski allowed five goals while making two saves,
while Jake Goodelman made one stop without allowing a goal in the
final 6:31.
The Bobcats never trailed in the game. Kelly got Quinnipiac on the
board less than eight minutes into the contest with an unassisted
marker that chased Providence's starting goalie, Finnegan, from the
game. With just over a minute left in the quarter, Oppenheimer made
it 2-0 off a Haggerty helper. Providence cut the deficit to one at
the 10:31 mark of the second quarter as Evan Olsen assisted Evan
Helda on the man advantage. But the Bobcats scored 10 of the final
11 goals the rest of the way, including the next four, to secure
the victory.
Quinnipiac outshot the Friars, 36-14, and picked up 30 ground balls
to Providence's 23. The Bobcats' defense allowed just eight of 18
Providence clear attempts, while Quinnipiac converted 17-of-20.
Quinnipiac was successful on both of its extra-man opportunities,
while the Bobcats' defense allowed just one goal in three chances
when playing a man down.
